An “absorbing, provocative, and far-reaching” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) look at what power is, who gets it, and what happens when they do, based on over 500 interviews with those who (temporarily, at least) have had the upper hand - from the creator of the Power Corrupts podcast and Washington Post columnist Brian Klaas.

Behold the orphan. Born into a world that is not a world. A digital being grown from a mind seed, a genderless cybernetic citizen in a vast network of probes, satellites, and servers knitting the Solar System into one scape, from the outer planets to the fiery surface of the Sun. Since the Introdus in the 21st century, humanity has reconfigured itself drastically. Most chose immortality, joining the polises to become conscious software.

I found this story interesting. I had heard it was a difficult story to get through. Not sure if I could recommend it or if I would come back to this.

Was curious
Revisado: 06-02-24
I had heard about this book and was curious to find out what the details were. It behooves them to try to help you as much as they can, but you also have to take into consideration that this is a business so it’s set up to try to maintain the millionaires lifestyle who wrote this with further investments that seem to be beyond the scope of the people this is trying to help.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

Historia
Most people will be shocked to learn that in 1933 a cabal of wealthy industrialists - in league with groups like the K.K.K. and the American Liberty League - planned to overthrow the U.S. government in a fascist coup. Their plan was to turn discontented veterans into American "brown shirts," depose F.D.R., and stop the New Deal. They clandestinely asked Medal of Honor recipient and Marine Major General Smedley Darlington Butler to become the first American Caesar. He, though, was a true patriot and revealed the plot to journalists and to Congress.

Historia
Holly Sherwin has been a struggling playwright for years, but now, after receiving a grant to develop her play Witching Night, she may finally be close to her big break. All she needs is time and space to bring her vision to life. When she stumbles across Hill House on a weekend getaway upstate, she is immediately taken in by the mansion, nearly hidden outside a remote village. It’s enormous, old, and ever-so eerie—the perfect place to develop and rehearse her play.

highs and lows that in the end balance
Revisado: 10-19-23
The supernatural spots in the book are really good. However, there are some cringe spots as well (there is a character that sings). I am a queer person, and yet I found these characters unrelatable. It is as good as the original book, but neither are as good as the 1963 Nelson Gidding’s screen play of the film The Haunting.

Definitely recommend. Fun horror. It should do well as a movie as long as they stick to the story.. and don’t add anything to it. Fingers crossed.

Historia
The promise that you can “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” is central to the story of the American Dream. It’s the belief that if you work hard and rely on your own resources, you will eventually succeed. However, time and again we have seen how this foundational myth, with its emphasis on individual determination, brittle self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment, does not help us. Instead, as income inequality rises around us, we are left with shame and self-blame for our condition.

Don’t be fooled…
Revisado: 09-17-23
This is NOT a political bias book. It is a very relevant real world analysis of human interdependence. Before you start to prattle your fallacious political acumens, first take a moment to think about how we are all dependent on one another in all of our achievements. Alissa Quart does a great job at breaking this down for all.

What is VALIS? This question is at the heart of Philip K. Dick's groundbreaking novel, the first book in his defining trilogy. When a beam of pink light begins giving a schizophrenic man named Horselover Fat (who just might also be known as Philip K. Dick) visions of an alternate Earth where the Roman Empire still reigns, he must decide whether he is crazy or whether a godlike entity is showing him the true nature of the world.
