Historia
The enchanted place is an ancient stone prison, viewed through the eyes of a death row inmate who finds escape in his books and in re-imagining life around him, weaving a fantastical story of the people he observes and the world he inhabits. Fearful and reclusive, he senses what others cannot. Though bars confine him every minute of every day, he marries visions of golden horses running beneath the prison, heat flowing like molten metal from their backs with the devastating violence of prison life.

Not enough stars!
Revisado: 10-22-15
This author is magical. The descriptive writing in this book makes the listener feel as though they are watching the story unfold. Denfeld crafted the details ever so clearly, while creating a perfect distance for the listener (reader) which was necessary because the subject matter is so very heavy. I am impressed with her skill at creating a sense of humanness that is easy to identify in characters whose behaviors are abhorrent.
After finishing any good audio book, I usually wish I had read instead of listened, but this time I'm delighted with having heard Frangione's perfect narration. His tone seemed to hold space while he gently told a story that was anything but gentle.
I admire authors who write emotional stories but create distance for the reader. This was superbly done in both the writing and the narration. There are not enough stars.
