Loved the fast pacing would have liked for the emotional arc and the adventure itself to be built up a bit more but loved the story and characters. fantastic!

While I really enjoyed the concept of the story and the world building and I adored the main characters, I was initially put off by the pacing. It was a bit slower than I typically prefer towards the beginning, but it really picks up once they go to Shar. Looking forward to the next book.

Overall, I enjoyed getting to know more about both the characters from book 1 like Zasha and seeing the growth and development for the main characters. I also loved the world building that went into book 2. everything opens up and pieces of things hinted at in book 1 start to fall into place. I also noticed some hinting of things that I'm guessing will be addressed in the next book, so I'm excited to see where that leads. overall, it was a fun read.

the narrator kept me trucking through this because while the writing itself was alright, the guys in the story gave off some Incel vibes. there was a half baked insertion about covid that was really jarring halfway through the story. And the only black characters are side kicks or are there specifically to benefit white people. the one indigenous character is white passing with dreads and is also very hipster vibes. There was some potential as far as the prose goes, but it needed a good once over from people in the groups being represented. pacing was okay but the battle was rushed and a bit anticlimactic. overall, pretty good descriptions and world building but a bit disappointing.

I loved this story from Sophia's strong willed character to Candace's kindness and strength.

I finished this book and DNFed the second book. While the story itself had some intrigue with magic, a curse, and changelings, I was really turned off by the way the only black and Native American characters were handled. There were several questionable lines in the first book, and in the 2nd book there was something along the lines of "he had anger issues. It must have been because of his native American ancestry." I put the series down shortly after that.

Overall, the ending sucked me in with mythical creatures, a major battle, and interesting new powers. The narration was good and their voice kept my attention, but I would've liked a little more differentiating between character voices (personal preference).

Nora's character has an interesting arc and plenty of depth, but she frustrates me at the end because I felt like some of what happens in the big battle undid parts of her character growth, but she does make up for it at the very end of the battle.

Cray was an interesting character. I liked his growth and how he learns to be more trusting while also making Nora more balanced by teaching her to not blindly trust.

Nora's crush/love interest doesn't have as much depth as I'd like to see from him, but I might just feel that way since we don't get POV chapters from him. he's kind and interesting, and I'd like to know more about him.

I had love/hate feelings for the Tolkien esque level world building. It was really intriguing when I had context for it, but at the beginning I kept putting it down because there wasn't enough happening for me. It had this huge expansive world which is great, but personally I get easily distracted. If you like dense world building and creative creatures, this is the book for you.

While I mostly enjoyed the narration, some of the author's word choices were so cringy it pulled me from the story like constantly saying the MC needed to "put on her big girl panties" or referring to arousal by using the words "girly parts." While I thought the premise was interesting and I liked some of the characters, I felt like the emotions needed to be built up further to bump it to 4 or 5 stars for me. I just didn't really feel super emotionally invested. However, I did enjoy some of the plot twists and the character building. Wasn't a huge fan of the "romance" because Enzo was a little overly possessive in a creepy kind of way.

Overall, I would have liked to see the stakes upped earlier in the series. Grace's character emotionally flip flops a lot and Rin was a little too passive for my liking. There was some good character development for Rin and Casey, but I didn't care much about the other characters. Of the books, my favorite was book 2. It was paced the best and had the best character development in my opinion. The premise with the "angels and demons" and the plot intriguing, so they had a solid premise and that's what kept me listening.

Overall, I loved the story. The romance was built up really well and the twists were foreshadowed without you getting beat over the head with it. The world building was vivid and intricate. Oliver's character was intriguing and irritating. The narrator was talented and distinguished the different character voices well. Some of them came off silly to me, but overall they did a good job. I look forward to listening to the next one.
