Historia
Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other televangelists first spoke of the United States being a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedoms and our way of life.

Very insightful
Revisado: 02-12-25
A very insightful and gripping look at the Christian church's nationalistic agenda. The book gives a peek at how these American church leaders influence their followers to hate diverse populations to uplift fascism.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Every year the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

Amazing and disappointing
Revisado: 08-12-21
I enjoyed the performance of the narration very much. As well as the sensual and figurative writing. Yet, the plot was anticlimactic and it left me with so many questions. Why was there a crow? Other questions will lead to spoilers, but so many unanswered questions that the simplified "and they lived happily ever after" YA ending didn't make sense.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

If you don't mind being spoon fed.
Revisado: 07-18-21
Noah's ability to share his life story is brave. His performance and storytelling is outstanding. However, he leaves no room to infer, predict or analyze character, culture or circumstance. Noah uses a big wooden spoon, the type that stereotypical mothers use to mix sauce, to feed his readers (listeners) with an abundance of over explanation. If you like being spoon fed, enjoy.

Historia
Amal Shahid has always been an artist and a poet. But even in a diverse art school, he's seen as disruptive and unmotivated by a biased system. Then one fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighborhood escalates into tragedy. "Boys just being boys" turns out to be true only when those boys are white. At just sixteen years old, Amal's bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it?

Amazing story.
Revisado: 12-04-20
Amazing story, yet unfortunately, it was too short. I wanted the poetic prose to continue framing the conflict between ther protagonist vs society (the bias school to prison system and the industrial prison complex). But I do appreciate the cliffhanger at the end.

Historia
A bag of chips. That's all 16-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad's pleadings that he's stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad's resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad's every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered.

It's a good YA book
Revisado: 08-14-20
It's a good YA audiobook. The performances were really good. I think if I was reading the book, I might have read half because of the predictability of what was going to happen. But the performance kept me engaged. Nevertheless, good story, not great or amazing, just good.

Historia
The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

Revisado: 08-08-20
As a middle school teacher I recommend this book to students, parents, teachers, educators and American and non-American citizens. It's very well read, truthfully told and the historical analysis were poetically phrased. I obviously enjoyed this book and hope young readers do as well.
