Insufferable protagonist
Revisado: 02-19-25
This wasn’t for me. The narrator was good and that is what kept me going.
I tried to have empathy for the main character but just wasn’t happening. The story meanders. It is more about loneliness, lack of love/confidence and always being desperate, petty and at times psychotic to find it through sex, revenge or doing whatever a man wants. The writing is subpar , overall everything about it except the narrator is mediocre. The underground SF scene is more boring & cliche than anything else.

Well written

I enjoyed listening to this
story. The narrator does a beautiful job and gives the story just the right feel and soul .It is a touching human story of friendship and having to grow up fast dealing with tremendous life challenges. I was hoping to read more historical facts about the country and how the government was overthrown in 2011 including the involvement of international military forces & how the Libyans felt about it. There is no mention of that in this story. The writer does a wonderful job of giving the reader a sense of how life was in Libya , the beauty of family life and traditions as well as the fear of government both are relayed masterfully.

Amid daily reports of violence, Cushla lives a quiet life with her mother in a small town near Belfast. By day she teaches at a parochial school; at night she fills in at her family’s pub. There she meets Michael Agnew, a barrister who’s made a name for himself defending IRA members. Against her better judgment—Michael is not only Protestant but older and married—Cushla lets herself get drawn in by him and his sophisticated world, and an affair ignites.

not enough history & context of the times
Revisado: 12-01-24
The narration is well done, the writing is strong, and the characters are well-developed. However, this is a romance story with little history, even though it is supposed to have some history of the " troubles" in Ireland, which I was hoping to read about. So, overall, it was disappointing for me. The ending chapters introduce a twist, taking the story out of the " romance, sex, adultery, passion" focus.

Historia
In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. With an abusive, alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur’s only chance of escaping destitution is his brilliant memory.

Lovely story & narration
Revisado: 11-26-24
I enjoyed listening to this. I was intrigued by how the author connected the three stories happening in the different times. History of the water, Yazidis suffering, the goodness and cruelty of all types of humans all interacting and repeating over & over is our life & our story.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Beautiful story
Revisado: 10-13-24
If “ enjoyment “ is the only criteria to judge this story by then I must give it 100% satisfaction rate. But it is more than that, I loved the story , the writing, the narrators both were wonderful. The octopus voice was so perfect & matched my vision of a talking octopus! The characters are people we all know, people with good hearts , ordinary flaws doing their best. The book made me happy, the story & the voice of the narrators had a calming effect on me. It was a pleasant & emotionally beneficial listen.

Bad narrator-beautiful writing
Revisado: 09-21-24
I liked the prose; the writer has a beautiful, solid literary pen.
The narrator detracts from the writing. I really like Arian Moayed as an actor, but as a narrator, it is a different story. He tries too hard, performing, wanting to give the words life. The words are beautiful, and his overdone, exaggerated accents is a disservice to the writing. I didn't like how he made the Iranian male characters' speech sound clownish, uneducated, and simply ridiculous. I should have read the book instead of listening to it.
The story takes an interesting twist in the second part of the book. The book is depicted as the story of an immigrant, and it is also very much a story of addiction and growing up with a single dad without extended family and without a community, perhaps paving the way to addiction, a sense of loneliness, and a painful search for meaning.
The first few chapters are challenging and disturbing, as the character lashes out painfully and angrily at life. I almost stopped reading it, but I am glad to have continued.
The writer gives us a very narrow-angle view of Iran and Iranians. The characters in Iran don't come across as sympathetic; only the two women are portrayed as compelling as they are victimized people.
Several references to urination at different parts of the story baffled me. Not sure what it signifies.

I liked the writing, it is beautifully written but the story is just too sad for no specific reason which made the story of the characters even more sad.

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Absolute waste of time
Revisado: 05-19-24
I tried to finish this story but just got too impossible. Constant “he said” , “I said “ was annoying.
The story is very predictable. It is not funny at all despite trying desperately .
Too bad I couldn’t return the book.
