Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Historia
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

No Character to Like
Revisado: 10-05-24
The story is told from the perspectives of 6 characters, which I think is a bit much for any novel. That said, character development was good but there wasn’t a single character that I liked or was rooting for. About 2/3 through, it’s clear who the muderer is. So the rest of the book dragged for me. I almost stopped listening but powered through in the hope that it would get better or reveal some kind of surprise twist.

Creative Engaging Storytelling
Revisado: 06-14-24
This was my first JoJo Moyes novel and I found it very entertaining and engaging. The way she wove all the lose ends together was very crafty. I liked that it was a story about about a variety of women (primarily two) examining what life had thrown them and transforming into stronger characters through the journey. I also like that it made me laugh!

Historia
There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . . The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away. But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption. Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

Not Your Average Mystery or Western!
Revisado: 04-02-24
Calico kept me intrigued! I bought it a few months before I listened to it so I’d forgotten the book description. That’s a great way to read it because there are more surprises that way!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

This was my favorite read of 2022! And not finding anything nearly as good in 2023, I’m reading it again! This is such a creative story! I’m looking forward to the Apple+ TV series later this year.

Love the characters!
Revisado: 05-12-23
When I first started listening, I almost return this audiobook. The narration is really odd. The character voices are good, but the part between, sounds like a simulated voice. But I must have gotten used to it. I’ve listen to three out of five in the box set. I’ve really grown to enjoy all of the characters. Being a native Californian, it bothers that they say Sequoia is in Northern California when it would be in central California, but beyond that, I find the story enjoyable. And the southern drawl for some of the characters is a bit silly for rural central California but if I didn’t live here I wouldn’t know that itis odd. So if you like cozy mysteries with a little bit of romance thrown in, stick with it, in spite of the narration.

Finlay Donovan is killing it...except, she’s really not. The new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head.

Loved it so much I listened Twice!
Revisado: 02-24-23
I discovered this book over a year ago and found it thoroughly enjoyable! Parts of it were laugh-out-loud funny! I bought the next two installments in the Findlay Donovan series as they were released. When I finished book 3, I was sad that I’d need to wait a year for book 4. I decided to relisten to book 1 and was not disappointed by that decision! The narrator is fantastic and made the story even more enjoyable. If you like cozy mysteries with some wit and humor to them, you will like this series!

Historia
Finlay Donovan has been in messes before—after all, she's an author and single mom who's a pro at getting out bloodstains for rather unexpected reasons—but none quite like this. After she and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they may have "borrowed" in the process of saving the life of Finlay's ex-husband, the Russian mob got her out of debt. But now Finlay owes them.

Historia
In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then, a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon, other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind....

Odd Book But prose is Remarkable
Revisado: 03-27-22
Overall I liked this book. I mainly selected it because of its Pulitzer Prize winning status. I might have like it better if I’d read it instead of listened to it. The narrator speaks so very slowly I had to adjust to 1.2x speed (and it was still slow). I found the prose in the book often beautiful and always imaginative.
