Some fatal flaws in this one…

I read this author’s next book, All the Dangerous Things, ahead of this read. I really like that one so I had high hopes. Overall it was an okay story. My gripe with so many authors is that they write women as idiots! Even when this is supposed to be an accomplished psychologist with her own practice we are supposed to believe she can’t make rational, logical decisions. At so many points I found myself yelling “just call the cops, you idiot!” That’s lazy writing. In my opinion, the best books have a protagonist who makes completely reasonable or (given their nature) understandable decisions.

Sure, there was a twist and the narrator was fine. And for that, I’ve given it 2 stars overall.

This was a ridiculous story. The narrator’s performance was great, which is why I’ve given it the number of stars I have. Otherwise, the story was so implausible I audibly laughed as the plot unfolded.

I don’t really understand the negative reviews. This is a great debut for Ashley. I liked the two timelines and loved the pacing of the story. If I had to gripe about one thing it would be that the characters could have used more development. I never felt like I truly knew any of the characters — even Margot, the main character, presented as somewhat one-dimensional.

Also I hate cliff hangers, but in this instance I’ll allow it. Lastly, I wasn’t a big fan of the narrator for Margot. I would have preferred Ashley narrate the whole thing, but I get why she didn’t want to do that.

Overall, this is worth a credit!

I finished this book because I was in too deep. Firstly, the OBVIOUS political leanings here are a bit much. I’m personally neutral when it comes to politics, but even I was like enough already. We get it. Liberals bad. Conservatives good. But if you can get past that, here is a man who has had everything taken from him, a man we’re supposed to be rooting for, doing some unconscionable things.

SPOILER ALERT AHEAD: towards the end of the book when he goes after Hartley (the husband) there is a short narration by a black man who is his driver. This is an “agreeable” black man to conservatives. Religious, veteran, and not a liberal. He dislikes the man he drives but does his job with professionalism. James Reese attacks Hartley’s vehicle and we are left to assume that his innocent driver has just been killed also. But the author offers no consolation for the loss of this innocent life. Not even a confirmation of his death. No closing of the loop. Very cruel and unbecoming of our “good guy.” This is only one example, but the book is littered with it. Overall, would not recommend.

I finished the book so perhaps that is worth something. But the journey was painful. The main character is excruciatingly daft and seems to get herself deeper and deeper into the problem led on by her stupidity. I would not recommend.

This is a solid read. Is it the best book I've ever read? No. Is it the worst? Not even close. The narrator does a fantastic job. She keeps you engaged throughout. Some of the story lines get a little... I'll say far fetched, but alas, this is fiction.

This book has good reviews, but I just couldn't get past how damn boring it was. It dragged and dragged for hours with no climactic appeal until I resigned myself to reading the book's summary and ending and calling it quits on the book with 7 hours left. The summary and ending were quite surprising (thus, my rating of 4 stars for the story) and I wish the author tried harder to make the book less of a bore throughout so that I made it that far.

This review might have some SPOILERS, but if I spoil this for you and save you $20 you should probably thank me. This book is like watching paint dry. Off white paint. In an empty room. Not only was it dull, it was at times remarkably unbelievable. Seriously, the motive for murder is just... Ridiculous. Also, if you are violently assaulted over the head with a baseball bat, you don't just wake up and stroll out of there half an hour later. And you certainly don't get to walk out of a blood bath without so much of a drive down to the precinct. I'll stop rambling. To conclude my rant, those were 10 hours of my life I'll never get back.

I should first start off by admitting that I am not one for non-fiction. I usually envelop myself in salacious mysteries that begin with a gruesome murder or unfaithful spouse. In all its unlikeness to my typical preference, it is the best story I've ever read (or listened to in this case). Laura Hillenbrand's ability for story telling lends itself to fiction, without losing any of the hard statistics of World War II that illustrate the gravity and enormity of its impact. I'd never known of the story of Louis Zamperini, and I'm more than glad that I do now. The performance was great, solemn and tempered. The story was incredible, provoking both extreme sorrow and extreme joy. This one is a must-read (or listen to) for sure.

The narration for this audio book is great. Thank heavens for that, because the writing is terrible. If you are anything above a 5th grade reading and comprehension level, you'll see every single "plot twist" coming from a mile away. Seriously, reading this book so frustrating because the characters took what seemed like ages to piece together very simple facts to reveal what was happening.
