A masterpiece

I have a Masters degree in writing (don’t judge my writing here 😜), and McCourt is does so many things brilliantly in this story, not the least of which is the way he so perfectly captures the voice and perspective of a young person (it is incredibly hard not to let your adult perspective seep in and taint that childlike viewpoint). This story is compulsively readable, especially as read by McCourt. He keeps what could have been an unbearably heavy story in less capable hands bearable through his matter-of-fact lens, his humility, and his laugh-out-loud dry humor. This is a masterpiece.

I’m a writer who studied memoir as part of a graduate school writing program, and this one has clearly been in the hands of a master (or, in this case, two. I thought many times while listening to this that Harry is much more brilliant than anyone has given him credit for). It is beautifully written and narrated, at times transportive, infuriating (the press and the Royal family), raw, and vulnerable (as all good memoirs must be). It humanized the Royal family for me and made me see some of the good things that come from their position in life (it would be hard to have the breadth of life experience Harry had in any other way), but it also made me glad to be American (even as this book demonstrated just how superior Royal Brits seem to feel to Americans in general and Black, divorced Americans in particular). It really is tragic that personal agendas and fragile egos got in the way of such a wonderful opportunity to modernize the monarchy and (heaven forbid!) create an alliance with other cultures, just like, ironically, historic Royal marriages did.

Overall, this is a brilliant, beautiful book, and worth the read. I’m so glad I gave it a chance.

Excellent Short Stories—Witcher Universe

This is the best fantasy I’ve read in a while (Sapkowski is an excellent writer and I love his sense of humor)! I too thought it was a bit jumbled, plot-wise, until I remembered that this is a short story collection, not a novel (hence the time jumping, etc). Overall, it’s a fun read—the author has done a good job building his world and characters in such a way that you can relax into the story and enjoy the escapism of it all. :)

I'm an MFA student (writing for children and young adults), so I've read many books on writing. This one is genius... ...it's given me many new insights into how I can craft a more compelling story. One of the best craft books I've read.
