Historia
The outcast youth Ishmael, succumbing to wanderlust during a dreary New England autumn, signs up for passage aboard a whaling ship. The Pequod sails under the command of the one-legged Captain Ahab, who has set himself on a monomaniacal quest to capture the cunning white whale that robbed him of his leg: Moby-Dick. Capturing life on the sea with robust realism, Melville details the adventures of the colorful crew aboard the ship as Ahab pursues his crusade of revenge, heedless of all cost.

The great American novel
Revisado: 09-26-23
What can be said about this great novel that hasn't already been said? Nothing comes close in terms of prose, narrative, or world building.
A great performance by Heald. The gold standard.

This classic expose of the Fed has become one of the best-selling books in its category of all time. Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magician's secrets are unveiled. Here is a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, the pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A boring subject? Just wait. You'll be hooked in five minutes. It reads like a detective story - which it really is, but it's all true.

Historia
Historians have long understood that conflicts over slavery, Constitutional interpretation, economic interests, and culture contributed to the coming of the War Between the States. Joseph Jay’s original and insightful study illuminates yet another important difference that fueled conflict between the North and South — theology. It has been more than once observed that Southern clergy were among the strongest advocates of Southern Independence. Jay shows why that was so.

Give yourself 2 hours to hear the South out
Revisado: 08-22-22
This book will only take you 2 hours to listen to, and it is well worth it. If you need a primer on where the South was coming from during this time in history, this is a great place to start.

Historia
The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 continues one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. Focusing on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume in Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. The word narrative is the key to this book's extraordinary incandescence and truth: The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved.

Simply the best
Revisado: 03-21-22
This is simply the best overall work you can come to for the American Civil War. Part 2 is just as good as part 1, and I'm hopeful part 3 will be too.

Historia
In this brilliant biography T. J. Stiles offers a new understanding of the legendary outlaw Jesse James. Although he has often been portrayed as a Robin Hood of the old west, in this ground-breaking work Stiles places James within the context of the bloody conflicts of the Civil War to reveal a much more complicated and significant figure.

Not the most interesting book
Revisado: 01-05-22
This book has a lot of detail surrounding Jesse James more than strict biographical information. Especially in the first half, there are many instances of "Jesse was probably doing this" or "this was common, so we can assume Jesse did this." I have an interest in the Civil War, and this book does a good job of connecting James to the war, but as a story it's hard to keep up with and probably longer than it needs to be.

The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

Start here and end here for your Civil War studies
Revisado: 12-14-21
Everything else I've read has been supplemental to this monster of a resource. I listen to this during drives, then consult other resources when I get home to make sure I accurately understood everything. I've been doing a lot of study through YouTube and other internet type resources, but also firsthand accounts like Longstreet's book, and after listening to Shelby Foote I feel like I've finally put them all into perspective. This is now my first recommendation when I'm asked where someone should go for Civil War information.
