Historia
The nightmare fear of the US had come true. One of our finest submarines, the U.S.S. Tampa, on a top-secret spying mission, had fallen into Chinese Communist hands. The Communists, fighting for survival in a savage civil war, now held not only the sub, the crew, and the gutsy Commander Sean Murphy hostage, but US power and prestige as well. America had one last desperate card to play.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Meh and that’s about it
Revisado: 02-21-24
I thought this sounded like an amazing book, but it was not. No real character development and perhaps the story is not there or it is the way the Author writes. I read The Lost City of Z….so 2 for 2 of uninspiring books. Hard to put a finger on it but I had such high hopes but they were not satisfied. Reader did an OK job, nothing extraordinary but it was not his fault. Honestly, skip this and read the O’Brien book mentioned in the last pages of this one.

Historia
The profoundly inspiring and fully documented saga of Joan of Arc, the young peasant girl whose "voices" moved her to rally the French nation and a reluctant king against British invaders in 1428, has fascinated artistic figures as diverse as William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Voltaire, George Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht, Carl Dreyer, and Robert Bresson. Was she a divinely inspired saint? A schizophrenic? A demonically possessed heretic, as her persecutors and captors tried to prove?

Deep but shallow
Revisado: 01-02-24
Some good info but too much of some info. Hard to describe, it seems the author delved too deeply in some areas and barely touched others. I struggled mightily to get through this audio book. The reader did an ok job, but some of the pronunciations were a bit over the top, almost like the newscaster that comes on a word in another language and over pronounces it to sound smarter ( think of any Italian food that someone’s wants to sound like they are a native Italian…or a BBC reporter saying Afff-Ghan-E-stahhn)…it just felt off-putting. There were times I wish I had the hard copy so I could learn who was being discussed. Not bad but certainly not great. I think this would have been better as a hard back.

Historia
In the gripping Never Panic Early, Fred Haise, Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 13, offers a detailed firsthand account of when disaster struck three days into his mission to the moon. An oxygen tank exploded, a crewmate uttered the now iconic words, “Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” and the world anxiously watched as one of history’s most incredible rescue missions unfolded. Haise brings listeners into the heart of his experience on the challenging mission—considered NASA’s finest hour—and reflects on his life and career as an Apollo astronaut.

Was expecting more details of everything. Perhaps not as much as Lovell’s book but was truly disappointed in the meat of the story. Told a fellow aviator it was by far the worst aviation/astronaut memoir that I’ve read and that is a big number. Author did get into better details on the free fall tests and his time after NASA but the die had been cast by then. The reader was OK but even his reading could not save this book.
