Historia
It's exhausting being Irish. The constant self-flagellation is enough to put anybody off their breakfast. Why are we so hard on ourselves? Is it the postcolonial overhang following centuries of oppression at the hands of a litany of foreign invaders? Or is it collective guilt for sending Westlife out into the wider world? In Surviving Ireland, acclaimed comedy writer Colm Tobin takes the listener by the hand for a satirical romp through modern Irish life.

Drivel. Don't waste your time.
Revisado: 03-18-25
I listen to a couple hours of this and turned it off. It's not history. It's not a personal memoir. It's drivel. Just jokes, the vast majority of which are not funny.

Historia
In October 1962, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union appeared to be sliding inexorably toward a nuclear conflict over the placement of missiles in Cuba. Veteran Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs has pored over previously untapped American, Soviet, and Cuban sources to produce the most authoritative book yet on the Cuban missile crisis.

Historia
In March 1941 Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future.

SKIP THIS ONE
Revisado: 05-13-18
The first half of this book is a salacious overview of Jimmy Stewart's sexual conquests as a young man. If you thought you were getting insight into Stewart's heroic military service, think again. This author is primarily interested in the sex lives of movie stars, and with a judgmental angle to boot. I read 11 chapters and ultimately gave up. I recommend "Hank & Jim," which provides real insights into Stewart's life, war experience and career.
Beyond that, this is the worst narrator I've ever come across, and that's after listening to hundreds of Audible books. He's like a bad radio actor, overplaying everything with lip-smacking satisfaction. Skip this one.

In this classic portrait of Dwight D. Eisenhower the soldier, best-selling historian Stephen E. Ambrose examines the Allied commander's leadership during World War II. Ambrose brings Eisenhower's experience of the Second World War to life, showing in vivid detail how the general's skill as a diplomat and a military strategist contributed to Allied successes in North Africa and in Europe and established him as one of the greatest military leaders in the world.

Mired in Details
Revisado: 12-21-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I've read a great deal of Stephen Ambrose, but this early work was before he hit his stride. His best work focuses on fascinating people and hews closely to their personal stories, revealing how their character formed the basis for their actions. This is a long, overly detailed book that spends many, many pages on the administration of the offices in the War Department, the division of labor between various branches, and the conflicts between this general and that admiral and oh my God, let it be over already.
Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen E. Ambrose again?
Absolutely.
What aspect of Richard Ferrone’s performance would you have changed?
Not my favorite narrator. Just lacks the pipes the great voices have.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment.

Historia
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

In Washington, D.C., where little stays secret for long, the identity of Deep Throat, the mysterious source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein break open the Watergate scandal in 1972, remained hidden for 33 years. Now, Woodward tells the story of his long, complex relationship with W. Mark Felt, the enigmatic No. 2 man in the Federal Bureau of Investigation who helped end the presidency of Richard Nixon.

A Rehash of All the President's Men. Not much new.
Revisado: 03-22-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Needs to be fresh material, not a rehash of another book I've read.
Has The Secret Man turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Secret Man?
N/A
Any additional comments?
I revere Bob Woodward as one of the men who saved our democracy during the Nixon years. But if you've read ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, as I recently did, this book is in large part a rehash with precious little new material about Mark Felt, the man revealed to be Deep Throat.
