Historia
The Notorious B.I.G. was one of the most charismatic and talented artists of the 1990s. Born Christopher Wallace and raised in Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, Biggie lived an almost archetypal rap life. Biggie released his first record, Ready to Die, in 1994, when he was only 22. Less than three years later, he was killed just days before the planned release of his second record Life After Death. Journalist Justin Tinsley’s It Was All a Dream is a fresh, insightful telling of the life beyond the legend.

Historia
Of the great figure in 20th-century American history perhaps none is more complex and controversial than Malcolm X. Constantly rewriting his own story, he became a criminal, a minister, a leader, and an icon, all before being felled by assassins' bullets at age 39. Through his tireless work and countless speeches he empowered hundreds of thousands of black Americans to create better lives and stronger communities while establishing the template for the self-actualized, independent African American man.

Historia
In 2007, a short blogpost by Gawker Media outed PayPal founder and billionaire investor Peter Thiel as gay. Thiel's sexuality had been known to close friends and family, but he didn't consider himself a public figure, and believed the information was private. This post would be the casus belli for a meticulously plotted conspiracy that would end nearly a decade later with a $140 million dollar judgment against Gawker and its bankruptcy. Only later would the world learn that Gawker's demise was not incidental - it had been masterminded by Thiel.

Good but could’ve been better
Revisado: 07-04-21
Conspiracy is a book about the Hogan vs Gawker lawsuit over a sex tape, backed by Peter Thiel a Silicon Valley investor, who was funding it because of Gawker’s desire to out him as being gay. But that’s just the surface level view of this long embittered battle between powerful people. I did enjoy this book a lot, but my one complaint was the writer overly editorialized the story, not in ways I disagreed with, but I think the story could’ve been told without all the conjecture. Great book!

Historia
Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history - Doom and Quake - until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry.

Best book about video games
Revisado: 07-04-21
Masters of Doom is about the rise of two of the greatest minds in video game history, John Romero and John Cormack. They created Doom and Quake and many other things along the way. It’s one of the best partnerships there ever was in video games, and they revolutionized the medium through tumultuous times. I found the book to be amazing but also a bit flat towards the end as Cormack and Romero go their own way. They never matched the greatness of working together. Fun book!

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

A Silicon Valley classic
Revisado: 07-03-21
Bad Blood is the story of Elizabeth Holmes and the defunct medical company Theranos. This book is illuminating, in terms of the fraud and deception that Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos pulled off, with their faulty blood tests, and junk science testing unit called The Edison. This book does have a happy ending though, and Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos went belly up, and deservedly so. What they did was horrendous. Props to this writer for exposing the truth! Well done sir.

Historia
A former US naval intelligence worker, Milton William Cooper published his manifesto Behold a Pale Horse in 1991. Since then it has gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies, becoming the number-one best seller in the American prison system. According to Behold a Pale Horse, JFK was assassinated - because he was about to reveal that extraterrestrials were about to take over the earth - by his driver, an alien himself; AIDS is a government conspiracy; and much more.

A touching tribute to a complicated man
Revisado: 07-02-21
Pale Horse Rider is about the rise and fall of the conspiracy theorist Bill Cooper, who was the first semi mainstream voice of that movement. I found the book to be spectacular, it is a bit longer than necessary. At times the book is disjointed, torn between relaying the ideas of Bill Cooper, on his shows and books, and telling the story of his tumultuous life. The author tells Bill Cooper’s story fairly, he isn’t a believer in everything the man said, but shows respect for him and that’s legit.

Could’ve been a classic
Revisado: 07-02-21
The Plague Year is just that, the story of covid year one. It has an unorthodox pattern of tracking the virus. The book is almost like snapshots of the outbreak. You follow people at the CDC, people in the government, frontline medical workers and more. Although I did enjoy the book, I thought that with more time maybe the writer could’ve deepened the narrative structure. Because it feels like a glimpse of covid more than the full picture. But Lawrence Wright is a great writer!
