Historia
The Soul of Baseball is as much the story of Buck O'Neil as it is the story of baseball. Driven by a relentless optimism and his two great passions - for America's pastime and for jazz, America's music - O'Neil played solely for love. In an era when greedy, steroid-enhanced athletes have come to characterize professional ball, Posnanski offers a salve for the damaged spirit: the uplifting life lessons of a truly extraordinary man who never missed an opportunity to enjoy and love life.

Wonderful baseball memories
Revisado: 07-02-24
I loved this book. I felt I knew Bick O'Neill personally by the time I finished it, and I think most people who actually met him, even for a few moments, felt he had been their lifelong friend. Buck finally did make the Hall Of Fame, but not until 2022, and as an Executive, not a player, manager, scout or coach. At least he is finally in!

Aquilino Gonell came to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a young boy. Although he spoke no English, he dedicated himself to his adopted land, striving for the American dream. Determined to be a success story, he joined the army to pay for college. He saw action in Iraq and returned home with PTSD. Believing in the promise of our government, he focused on healing himself and supporting his family. His hard work paid off when he landed a coveted position with the United States Capitol Police and rose to the rank of sergeant. January 6, 2021, changed everything.

Incredibly powerful and moving book!
Revisado: 12-31-23
It was heartbreaking reading the story of Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell. This man, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, enlisted in the Army, served a tour in Iraq, became a U.S. Citizen, and then joined the Capitol Police Dept. The events of January 6, he describes as far worse than anything he experienced during his time in the Iraq War.
It horrifies me that so many people still downplay the events of that day, calling it a "hoax", or a "peaceful protest", or simply say it was "no big deal". Those people, more than any, need to read this book, but I doubt any will.
This book is utterly worth your time!

Historia
Keith Hernandez revolutionized the role of first baseman. During his illustrious career with the World Series-winning St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets, he was a perennial fan favorite, earning eleven consecutive Gold Gloves, a National League co-MVP Award, and a batting title. But it was his unique blend of intelligence, humor, and talent - not to mention his unflappable leadership, playful antics, and competitive temperament - that transcended the sport and propelled him to a level of renown that few other athletes have achieved.

What an amazing man!
Revisado: 10-08-22
I'm shocked at the reviews here calling the book "cold" or "reads like a text book". I found it incredibly engaging, and learned so much about Jim Henson, both as a creative genius, and as a wonderful, if complex, human being! I made the mistake of listening to the details of his final illness and death, and then his Memorial Service, while I was driving. Hard to drive when you want to cry!
Highly, highly, highly recommended!

Historia
Gideon Clarke is a man on a quest. He is out to prove to the world, as his father tried before him, that the world-champion Chicago Cubs traveled to Onamata, Iowa, in the summer of 1908 for an exhibition game against all-stars from the Iowa Baseball Confederacy, an amateur league. The game, which was to be short, pleasant, and the Cubs thought, one-sided, turned into a titanic battle of over 2,000 innings, played mostly in the pouring rain. This game is not on the record books.

Historia
The Lowells of Massachusetts were a remarkable family. They were settlers in the New World in the 1600s, revolutionaries creating a new nation in the 1700s, merchants and manufacturers building prosperity in the 1800s, and scientists and artists flourishing in the 1900s. Though no strangers to controversy, the family boasted some of the most astonishing individuals in America's history.
