Historia
Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria. I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people.

And it is a gentle, playful, and understated tour, but if you think about the what is said here for just a minute, a bigger and more disturbing set of implications will come into view. Listen to this along with drilled podcast episodes on fossil fuel involvement in research agendas and then you will beg your kids to apply to Canadian schools,

Historia
The United States, Russia, China, and other countries around the world have experienced contact with the phenomenon, as we will discover in War. Americans demand that their leaders reveal what they know. They demand disclosure. But what do our allies, and our enemies, know about the phenomenon and why have they not already disclosed? Why is this an international issue, and not just an American one? And what does that tell us about the phenomenon?

Historia
Part memoir, part history, Burn Book is a necessary chronicle of tech’s most powerful players. This is the inside story we’ve all been waiting for about modern Silicon Valley and the biggest boom in wealth creation in the history of the world. When tech titans crowed that they would “move fast and break things,” Kara Swisher was moving faster and breaking news. While covering the explosion of the digital sector in the early 1990s, she developed a long track record of digging up and reporting the facts about this new world order.

Pretty funny stuff
Revisado: 03-12-24
I sat in berkeley getting a phd ignoring tech as many of my friends got fabulously wealthy -- i knew this scene was important but i found it boring and soulless- it is fun to have this narrator to show me that the inside story was almost exactly as i suspected-- not a lot of surprises here, but kara swisher has a cute voice with a lot of bravado and a healthy amount of self deprecation. She offers a kind of compass for a path with some degree of integrity and strong principles, despite a somewhat naive faith in the fundamentals of market power here prior to the period covered. My head hurt every time she used the word "grok" (too many times!) and i wondered whether the mispelling of "mensches" was supposed to be a clever joke that I couldn't get, but I finished this book in one night because it she does have cute and compelling style and seems to be a smart, insightful presence despite the insider position... also glad to hear that newsom did not succumb to pressure to wear a diaper (!) -- what a world... in a few minutes we will look back and this book may look like a light gloss on sometimes much more grotesque than anyone is willing to see or say right now, as a student of history should know, and as anyone in inland CA will tell you -- the erasure of labor is hard to bear and irritated me a lot... but for now, it is still possible to forget the horror of warehouse deaths in the pandemic and the pervasive dread around me as people try to anticipate what is coming next from these folks-- for now, this book is pretty insightful, pretty funny, and hard to put down.

Historia
The Talmud says: “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel’s DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small....

Illuminating research; flattering criticism
Revisado: 02-16-24
Good storytelling and rigorous research; seems to be framed as an intervention in the escalating internal struggle among Zionists-- powerful on its own terms, but narrowly framed in that sense-- in the sense of presuming an audience that possesses an increasingly rare sensibility of one that truly cares about such a struggle; one that has not either rejected Zionism as irredeemable or succumbed to a dissociative posture rooted in denial, nostalgia, or some variety of grotesque nihilism.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Stunning and masterful
Revisado: 01-18-24
I am in awe of this stunning achievement and could not stop listening to this story. Kuang succeeds in harnessing the dark emotional energies of commodification & racism to charge a story that will awaken and empower cynical audiences that are expecting to be manipulated

Crazy, cringey, brilliant
Revisado: 07-10-23
If you lived through this period, you will see that this is not quite what it seems to be at first. It is a pretty brilliant reflection on displaced shame associated with GW Bush years and the invasion of Iraq. Saturated with atmospheric reminders of this period — funny and grotesque — and pretty wild

Historia
Janet Malcolm delves into the psychopathology of journalism using a strange and unprecedented lawsuit as her larger-than-life example: the lawsuit of Jeffrey MacDonald, a convicted murderer, against Joe McGinniss, the author of Fatal Vision. Examining the always uneasy, sometimes tragic relationship that exists between journalist and subject, Malcolm finds that neither journalist nor subject can avoid the moral impasse that is built into the journalistic situation.
