Historia
The world's old political borders have dissolved. The NAU is civilization's carcass, a nation ruled by two political parties: Enterprise, the sink-or-swim party where each party member has no one else to blame for their starvation or astronomical wealth; and Directorate, whose members have a guaranteed safety net but can never rise above their station.

Overrated, disjointed, disappointing
Revisado: 05-25-16
From the ratings and reviews, I expected something more. This is overblown, and takes what could be an interesting combination of characters and story and muddies the waters by throwing far too many narrators into the mix. I'd love to listen to this with just one narrator and see if the story is easier to engage with.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Stunning work by both the author and narrator. This was a joy from beginning to end. Fantastic characters, plot and narration. Torchwood / Doctor Who fans will love this.

Irresponsible portrayal of drug use
Revisado: 08-14-15
Loved the first book, and really love the characters and the world Cornell has created, but this book left me seething due to the totally unrealistic use of meth as a plot device for keeping the characters awake.
Anyone who has lost someone to meth addiction could tell you how unlikely it is that someone using meth would be able to continue to function as these characters do and then just stop using when it was no longer "required".
I'm really gobsmacked that an author of Cornell's normal calibre could portray something so serious so flippantly. Very disappointed.

Very satisfying conclusion
Revisado: 08-06-15
I've thoroughly enjoyed this series and this ending does not disappoint. I thought the previous book was a bit of a misstep in that it seemed to mostly serve to set things in place for the finale, but the payoff is here. I'll miss these characters and Christian Rummel's brilliant narration. It was a great ride!

Potential somewhat undone by angst overload
Revisado: 12-07-14
I've loved this series, but for me the end was an exercise in frustration. Just a bit too much teenage angst and not quite enough story for this to be the satisfying ending I'd hoped for.
The writer's habit of using two or three metaphors in a row when Ruby is describing her emotions really wore on me after awhile. A shame, as this was, overall, a well plotted saga with very interesting characters. In the end, though, there was just too much sledgehammer and not enough subtlety.

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government "rehabilitation camp." She might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America's children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control. Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

Complex, engaging, enjoyable
Revisado: 08-30-14
This series is extremely enjoyable. The characters are engaging, the plot is complex but understandable and the ideas covered are quite challenging.
The author creates characters that we grow to care about, makes them flawed as to be human but not so flawed that we can't care about them.
The narrator does an excellent job of handling female and male voices and making them believable characters.
I'd highly recommend this series of books!

Didn't live up to expectations
Revisado: 08-30-14
I bought this based on the positive reviews, and for me this didn't live up to what I'd read.
There is a very interesting premise here, but the story is let down by:
* one dimensional characters
* too many subplots
* too much exposition
The author doesn't write convincing teenage voices, doesn't create characters we can identify with or care about, and certainly doesn't know how to create strong female characters. Women in this story are either simpering housewives or seductive vixens. It really grated on me by the end.
I'm not sure I care enough about the characters to come back for more. I need a break from them at any rate,

Enjoyable if predictable
Revisado: 06-30-14
What did you like best about The Beginning of the End? What did you like least?
The narration of this book is excellent, and the main character is well developed and easy to care about. The writer deals with action scenes well. There's nothing earth-shatteringly new about this story, but if you want a reliable zombie thriller this will do the trick.

Historia
An epic story of survival at all odds and one of the most anticipated books of the year. In a ruined and hostile landscape, in a future few have been unlucky enough to survive, a community exists in a giant underground silo. Inside, men and women live an enclosed life full of rules and regulations, of secrets and lies. To live, you must follow the rules. But some don't. These are the dangerous ones; these are the people who dare to hope and dream, and who infect others with their optimism.

This story will stay with me for a long time. The narration is hauntingly beautiful, the characters are well developed and engaging and the story keeps you guessing right until the end. Couldn't recommend this any more highly.

Monotonous
Revisado: 06-30-14
What would have made Contamination Boxed Set better?
I'm not sure if was just the story or partly the narration, but I found this to have very slow pacing, very few rises and falls, and very little characterisation. The author doesn't have great skills at writing action scenes. By the end I found I didn't know any of the characters better than I did at the beginning and I didn't care about them.
