I really enjoyed this book. Particularly the individual stories told throughout. The author did an incredible job conjuring a place and time, which developed in me a curiosity on a number of topics that did not exist before. But it did feel too loose at times, like we had officially left the rails.

My least favorite part was the narration of female characters. Morgan Le Fay was read like a fish wife. Which was weird. Guinevere was read equally strange, although he did adjust her read somewhat to become less stiff and haughty. And many of the characters voices and accents changed frequently.

Regardless, I did enjoy it overall - but would have loved to have experienced with a different narration.

The book itself felt like it took far too long to accomplish what it sought to. It seemed like it could have been easily cut in half. But part of that feeling may have been the new narrator. I absolutely believe she may be a great narrator on other projects, but it felt like she hasn’t listed to any of the other narrations - both of which closely matched and we’re fairly seamless. She made Fayre so soft spoken she just whispers blandly at all times. And honestly that’s how most of the female characters are read. Even a couple male characters. The all sound so meek, sleepy, and borderline brain dead. And some of the saucy scenes were excessively cringey with the unnatural, husky, heavily breathy tones. Three ughs on a four ugh scale.

What did you like best about Sphere? What did you like least?

I love the way this story plays on archetypal fears. The imagery of the sphere, the way that each character's flaws are made bare by their interaction with it, and the universal fear of deep water.

Would you recommend Sphere to your friends? Why or why not?

I'm not sure I would, mainly because there are a lot of uncomfortable moments in how Crichton describes the black character and the female character. His attitudes about both are incredibly outdated, even for the time this was written. In addition, I've noticed an obnoxious trend for Crichton to work in opportunities for off-topic lectures about his personal views on everything from depression, man-made climate change (denying it's existence), sexual assault (women should dress more conservatively), race, psychology, and more. It comes off as very arrogant and condescending to readers. His books would be amazing if he left out these ham-fisted attempts to work his personal thoughts and feelings on unrelated topics into the story.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Scott Brick is overall a great narrator, but he has this wistful cadence to his narration that starts to feel melodramatic. Even when he's talking about something super mundane, his cadence is exactly the same as when he's talking about something dangerous, emotional, or exciting. It can become too much at times.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I think CRISPR makes an incredibly fertile ground for story telling, but I feel like Suarez fell short of creating a compelling story. He always has great ideas to build his stories on, but the stories themselves always fall flat.

Any additional comments?

I've finally decided to accept that although Suarez has really great ideas to build on, he doesn't have the writing chops as of yet to fully flesh them out into something really incredible. He's got great vision, and his stories always seem grounded enough to seem as if they are showing a plausible future, but the characters and stories themselves never really feel fully matured.

Any additional comments?

I love these books for their fun and mindless entertainment, and they really make my long commutes to work much less torturous. As a matter of fact I actually look forward to my drive so I can listen to this series. But after a few of the books I started to get really tired of the way Butcher made every woman total hottie. I think this book in particular uses the phrase
