Historia
Lady Clarissa Crambray wanted a husband, but maybe not as much as her stepmother wanted one for her. Really! Doffing her spectacles might make a girl prettier, but how would she see? She'd already caused enough mayhem to earn a rather horrible nickname. Yet as all other suitors seemed to shy away in terror, there came a man to lead her to the dance floor. A dark, handsome, blur of a man.

I couldn't believe any of it. the plot had potential but after the hero meets the heroine and falls in love,.... he could have purchased her glasses to keep her accident free but he didn't even knowing she was in danger. So dumb and unbelievable. The intimacy scen in her bedroom while a fire rages outside the room and her weak attempts to let him know bc she was consumed with passion was the worst. She wasn't smart at all and could have fallen for literally anyone who paid any attention to her and he was interested in her bc she was half blind and couldn't judge him based on his facial scars.... no basis for relationship. Just a terrible storyline. Sometimes I feel like these books are rushed because of a deadline under contract.

Doesn't seem to fit writer's style

Love AC books. They are heart wrenching and sweet...the ones I've listened too so far. This one was quite flat. Way too much intimacy scenes completely over done and take up too much time. I found myself tapping 30 seconds ahead like 20 taps just to get past the wasted time. The language was also vile to the max which was a big let down bc any emotional investment I had in the main male character would disappear once he started talking dirty. Like being doused with ice cold water ...

just meh
Revisado: 03-16-25
The story started off great but slowly lost me when it came to herione being betrothed to someone she liked and yet constantly chased after another man in public at every chance she had without respect to her surroundings or her family. I just wish it was written better. I have read/listened to so many of LH other series and they have all gotten me in the gut emotionally and I have been 100% invested in story and main characters but this one was just flat. I waisted a credit on this one.

SPOILERS.............
At times the story was so outlandish and unbelievable but then there would be a redeeming scene where I would laugh out loud and a twist that I didn't see coming. This isn't the typical love/hate romance. Lily is unconventional to an extreme and somehow it's acceptable in 1800s England (which we all know is a definite fairytale). But the wild and crazed way the two main characters fought/argued/defied eachother was different a bit, especially since the language they used was vile. At a scene were Alex is trying to hold on to Lily and propose marriage, she bites his hand and wildly started to berate him as he retracts his hand and yells at her declaring his devotion and intention to be with her no matter what and seals the declaration with "you B@#!!" Not the traditional way to propose but it was hilarious 🤣.

one of my favorites
Revisado: 03-12-25
Just when you think there is no possible way for two people to ever come together in happiness...somehow Sherry Thomas makes it happen in such a perfect way.I am uncomfortable with the explicit details and feel the story is strong enough to hold up without them, so when I retell the story to family and friends I omit the details and just say they were intimate or had a passionate night. ST is a very talented writer.

I love MS but this particular story was just all wrong. The female lead is so unrelatable unlikable unbelievably rude and obnoxious. And we are supposed to believe she is and has been in love with the male lead for so long but uses her bad attitude to shield herself from rejection. Nope. The male lead is unlikable also as he is explained as a royal blooded Persian living in England but still holding to strong Muslim beliefs about women and their place in society while he has 2 female lovers that are in love with eachother but also entertain him contractually as Paramores and they also are caregivers to his illegitimate 5 year old son. Once married he discontinues their relations but still visits solely to see his son who has a nanny. His wife visits a man friend and holds his hand in public and receives late night visits from him secretly without considering how disrespectful and inappropriate it is. And all the while being rude and confrontational. Both leads are terrible. This is not a good one.
I recommend The Bellamy sisters series.

had potential but not for me
Revisado: 11-08-24
Some books try too hard and this is one of them. Completely unlikable female lead. She kept getting caught and then she would says she was the best at what she did. Big fat eye roll on most of her over confident speeches on how smart she was. The dialogue was 7 grade level ..... it reminds me of teens that cuss alot to try to impress one another. Alot of the dialogue was unnatural and didn't seem normal and even certain explanations for frivolous things were unnecessary and oddly written. It was just so shallow. I could form any kind of attachment or invest my emotions in the female lead bc she was a terrible person that had no conscious about stealing from people with money bc she needed it. Great reason....really? Then she leaves a small child unattended and is the reason and drunk lady falls a almost dies. She sets up politicians and blackmails one with obscene pic of them in compromised situation and to the one she likes and respects she let's him know he is under an obligation to her for her NOT putting him in a compromising situation like she could have. Everything was so dumb from confronting the fake Lucca and blowing her cover and telling her she didn't like being spied on. So dumb, especially since she herself knew her boss was threatening her so he was probably threatening the fake Lucca too. She was being watched and followed everywhere but somehow not when she spoke privately to all these people including Devon. All the driving she did and Mr. Smith never put an airtag or tracking device on her vehicle.... that is really ridiculous. I didn't like the Narrator either, just a totally big NO.
