Idiocracy as entertainment has its limits

All of the main characters are insufferably stupid, stubborn, and rude. I don't mind this behavior in moderation, but it's like they took four copies of Jax from the UnderVerse series and turned them up to 11 for 30+ hours.

Solid. Wasn't incredible yet I still enjoyed it, especially where the story seems to be going.

Felt like I was reading an Adrian Tchaikovsky novel (which is a good thing). The story was told well, the characters were interesting, and most importantly it made me want to read the next in the series.

I felt like a captive audience for the majority of the book with the increasingly incessant inner ramblings of a man-child that pretends to be a hero to cover for the whiny coward he is.

It's basically 30 hours of being stuck around an unmedicated schizophrenic, so if that's your cup 'o tea, you'll love this book.

I simply can't stand the MC; as much as I hate abridged books, I'd love a version of this series with Rob's inane inner/ outer ramblings excised. Who the hell prioritizes getting back to their best friend (who is on a DIFFERENT F'ING WORLD/DIMENSION) over the hot elf that reciprocates his love for them?
The incongruous nature of his character makes each successive book more of chore to finish than the last. It's like the author is trolling his readers at this point.

Can't think of any major complaints and look forward to starting the next in the series. it's always refreshing when a series maintains its appeal/quality after this many books.

I was so pumped for this book due to absolutely loving the first one, but sadly it made the same exact plunders Jez's 'Rise of Mankind' sequels did (which would contain spoilers for both series).

The saddest part was my favorite character becoming unbearable and irrational whenever given the chance. It's to the point that I've lowered all expectations for the next installment.

The performance was good, but the story and divergence from the first book left me disappointed. Avoiding any spoilers, I'll just say that this book contained about a 1/3 of the adventuring in the tower found in the first book. It was on the cusp of only serving as a side story in my opinion.

Here's hoping to the next installment making up for why I read this book in the first place.

As a huge fan of Jez's work, this came out of left field for me as I wasn't aware he had another new series. His 'UnderVerse' series has been my favorite so far, but somehow this new 'Arise' series has taken the cake. It combines the best aspects of 'UnderVerse' and 'Rise of Mankind', massively trims the typical MC self-loathing, and best of all it shines as a LitRPG without the 5-minute character sheet recaps we hate so much.

Cheers to Jez for having both a male and female narrator. I realize it raises the production costs, but it makes books so much better. It messes with one's psyche after hundreds of books with men voicing beautiful women; I'm probably preconditioned to finding the voice of female long-term smokers more attractive by this point (thanks to audiobooks).

The female narrator is top notch; her range of accents/personalities alone are impressive, yet somehow she manages to layer life-like speech idiosyncrasies on top of that. It improves the performance from the level of a theatre performance, to the dialogue found in great movies / candid documentaries. It's her fault now though that I'm in love with a fictional Danish girl; she has raised the bar too high.
The male narration is also solid. For several chapters I didn't realize the MC is British, as the narrator uses an American accent, but in the end I'd rather have great narration over a poor accent. Risky, but smart choice in the end IMO.

The amount of Dunning-Kruger effect in action, paired with the horrible audio quality and constantly quivering voices made this unbearable.
