Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

Historia
We know the universe had a beginning. With the Big Bang, it expanded from a state of unimaginable density to an all-encompassing cosmic fireball to a simmering fluid of matter and energy, laying down the seeds for everything from black holes to one rocky planet orbiting a star near the edge of a spiral galaxy that happened to develop life as we know it. But what happens to the universe at the end of the story? And what does it mean for us now?

Even if you don't understand all of the concepts of this book, it is sure to open your mind! I enjoyed it even though I had to rewind several times in an effort to grasp what the writer is explaining - but I love books like that. If you want to stretch - I recommend that you put this interesting book on your list.

Historia
The Psychopath Test is a fascinating journey through the minds of madness. Jon Ronson's exploration of a potential hoax being played on the world's top neurologists takes him, unexpectedly, into the heart of the madness industry. An influential psychologist who is convinced that many important CEOs and politicians are, in fact, psychopaths teaches Ronson how to spot these high-flying individuals by looking out for little telltale verbal and nonverbal clues. And so Ronson, armed with his new psychopath-spotting abilities, enters the corridors of power.

Intentionally Vague?
Revisado: 11-26-24
This journey through the "madness industry" is not really a fun one. In fact, it is chilling in some respects and perhaps that is the point. Sometimes I felt the author went down rabbit holes only to come back again and surprise the reader in some disconcerting way. I did stick with it despite feeling a bit unnerved. Again, perhaps that is the author's intent in his effort to expose the "Madness Industry".

Our understanding of the American West has moved far beyond pop culture in recent years. The legendary people and events we associate with the Wild West - the last stand at the Alamo, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the exploits of Calamity Jane, the hardships of the Oregon Trail - are even more fascinating once the historical realities have been separated from the myths.

Historia
A belief in free will touches nearly everything that human beings value. It is difficult to think about law, politics, religion, public policy, intimate relationships, morality—as well as feelings of remorse or personal achievement—without first imagining that every person is the true source of his or her thoughts and actions. And yet the facts tell us that free will is an illusion.

If you're having trouble trying to wrap your head around the concept of a lack of free will, perhaps the collection of chemicals that makes up you, will cause you to read this book, and then your brain may come to better understand what makes you tick.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Spectacular! Could not put it down!
Revisado: 11-26-24
This book is nothing short of fabulous! Travel back in time as Ronald White takes you right there in a most engaging manner. I learned a plethora of things I never knew about Ulysses S. Grant, and to think I considered myself a history buff. Bah! I didn't know the half of it, but now I do! When it was finished, I wanted to start all over again at page one. What's more, I rarely give 5 stars for performance but in this case, the reader, Arthur Morey, is absolutely the perfect voice for this amazing work.
I consider this a must read for all.

Historia
No Democracy Lasts Forever argues that the Constitution has become a threat to American democracy and must be dramatically changed or replaced if secession is to be avoided. Deeply troubled by the Constitution's inherent flaws, Erwin Chemerinsky, the renowned dean of Berkeley law school, came to the sobering conclusion that our nearly 250-year-old founding document is responsible for the crisis now facing American democracy.

Very interesting - a little chilling
Revisado: 11-26-24
This thought-provoking book on democracies, in particular that of the United States, kept my interest all the way through. So complete was my enjoyment that I purchased a hard copy as a birthday gift for a family member. The book outlines many details about our system, how everyday terms we take for granted came to be, and so much more. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Historia
As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption - even murder and genocide - generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, bestselling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie.

In Doc Holliday: The Life and Legend, the historian Gary Roberts takes aim at the most complex, perplexing, and paradoxical gunfighter of the Old West, drawing on more than 20 years of research - including new primary sources - in his quest to separate the life from the legend. Doc Holliday was a study in contrasts: the legendary gunslinger who made his living as a dentist; the emaciated consumptive whose very name struck fear in the hearts of his enemies
