A personal yet universal experience of losing a loved one
Revisado: 09-20-20
Those we love the most will die, or if you believe in an afterlife, “pass on." I absolutely believe in an undying soul and even rebirth, but my sense of shockingly painful loss is virtually same as that of this accomplished writer.
Joan Didion's detailed sharing of her experience of the death of her husband and adult daughter, help us feel less alone in our own inevitable loss.

Historia
With only a yellowing photograph in hand, a young man - also named Jonathan Safran Foer - sets out to find the woman who might or might not have saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Accompanied by an old man haunted by memories of the war, an amorous dog named Sammy Davis, Junior, Junior, and the unforgettable Alex, a young Ukrainian translator who speaks in a sublimely butchered English, Jonathan is led on a quixotic journey over a devastated landscape and into an unexpected past.

PAINFUL Narration
Revisado: 03-28-20
The heavy amateur accent does no favors to the narrator's slightly high-pitched (as evident in his other work) American voice. It's the combination that is deadly. I see in the reviews, though, that a few people find it "hilarious." As always, different strokes. It was so abrasive to my ear and to my mind that I could only listen to this audiobook for a few minutes.

Delightful Anthropomorphism!
Revisado: 03-24-20
Most story collections are a mixed bag of mediocre and bad, with only a couple of good ones. Most of these stories are unusually creative and quietly pleasing. With few exceptions, the narration is excellent, and each story is embellished with varying degrees of sound.
I almost never ever give 5 stars. This one deserves it!

Wondering whether eating powdered mummies might be just the thing to cure your ills? Tempted by those vintage ads suggesting you wear radioactive underpants for virility? Ever considered drilling a hole in your head to deal with those pesky headaches? Probably not. But for thousands of years, people have done things like this - and things that make radioactive underpants seem downright sensible! In their hit podcast, Sawbones, Sydnee and Justin McElroy breakdown the weird and wonderful way we got to modern healthcare. And some of the terrifying detours along the way.

Interesting and Amusing
Revisado: 03-06-20
A married couple, Justin and Sydnee McElroy, a present a series of historical medical and physiological facts in a very conversational and amusing manner. I'm not deeply interested in the subject but I was definitely entertained by their delivery, Justin, particularly, can be quite funny. I'm an enormously picky reader (truthfully, I am picky about everything) but I recommend this book!

From comedian and writer ( Parks and Recreation, Eastbound & Down) Harris Wittels comes a hysterical breakdown of boasts, brags, and self-adulation disguised as humble comments and complaints - based on his popular @humblebrag Twitter feed. >Something immediately annoyed Harris Wittels about Twitter. All of a sudden it was acceptable to brag, so long as those brags were ever-so-thinly disguised as transparent humility....

Tiny Tweets with comments doth not a book make
Revisado: 02-28-20
I like the author's relaxed voice and his amusing wit, but the book itself consists entirely of one or two-line Tweets by both the famous and tediously semi-famous, which the author immediately mocks, puts down, or criticizes in a line or two (frequently deservedly). There is no plot, no development, no nothing! Just one Tweet after another, after another, after another, after... you get it.
This might make an entertaining and moderately interesting short article, but as a book, it's like a forest of matchsticks without a tree in sight.

Starts well and gets much better!
Revisado: 01-31-20
At first you think it’s just amusing and clever, which it is throughout. But at some point, maybe around the final third of the book, the plot becomes much deeper and more poignant, the writing more refined. I loved this narrator! This book is a GEM.

Karen Russell’s comedic genius and mesmerizing talent for creating outlandish predicaments that uncannily mirror our inner in lives is on full display in these eight exuberant, arrestingly vivid, unforgettable stories. In “Bog Girl”, a revelatory story about first love, a young man falls in love with a 2,000-year-old girl that he’s extracted from a mass of peat in a Northern European bog. Extraordinary Writing
Revisado: 01-06-20
This write! is miles above almost everyone else when it comes to a poetic inventive lyrical yet strong use of image and vocabulary. I only wish that I were a better writer to describe her work! Her subject matter isn’t always comfortable for me - I’m not a fan of the undead or weird, but the writing is so good I will go on reading Karen Russel, no matter what the plot! Such a relief and joy after mountains of mediocre writing.

A beautifully written classic "story tale!"
Revisado: 03-06-19
I loved this King, Queen, two Princes, one very bad Advisor (with a whiff of dragon), story. Bronson Pichot's narration is perfection - very subtly nuanced tones and rich characterizations. Adults will appreciate its excellence and kids will adore the arch- typical plot.

The cast of characters in this compilation is a menagerie of animals: cats, dogs, birds, even a dragon - and their owners. These stories look at the myriad of experiences, and adventures, that pet ownership can bring. Join a medieval scholar who discovers that not all mythical creatures are extinct, stalk the night with the Cat of Frankenstein, kick that caffeine habit with a class of kindergartners, dance along with a divorcée and her dog, and more!
