I am a writer and editor, so I understand how writers are in love with their words. However, the story of Kevin was completely unnecessary. Could easily have been left out, it wouldn’t have harmed the book at all. I guessed who the culprit was about midway through the book. This is a verbose book that really needs editing. Richard Armitage does an excellent job as the narrator. I am surprised he made it all the way through the book without dying of ennui.

I gave four stars for performance because of some mispronunciations. Those always annoy me. The story is a memoir not pure history, but as primary source material it is excellent.

There's a lot of excuse making for Japanese brutality on the Bataan Death March and I think it was far too over-stated. Otherwise, it was a good story.

This was an okay book, but I found it unbelievable. First, that the heroine would shilly-shally like she did, and second, that the Comte would wait around so patiently. The real story was of the Comte's daughter. Much time was given to that, and not enough to the love story.

This is a good complement to the mini-series "Band of Brothers". Very enjoyable. However, the narrator mispronounces a number of names--a fault that could have been prevented if he had watched the mini-series. He studies too hard to pronounce things in French. Nothing wrong with the book, though.

I'm a big fan of Victoria Holt, but this is not one of her best stories. There is no fault to find with the narration, but the story itself is too unlikely for evaluation. I can't think what made VH write something so wildly improbable. Anyway, it is far from the quality of Mistress of Mellyn, King of the Castle, or her other books. ( I would love to see the ones that I just mentioned in Audible.)

I am a fan of Victoria Holt, and would like to see more of her books made available. The narration was outstanding. The story was a bit predictable for Victoria Holt. The background, spent leading up to the "real" story, was too long. The main part was too short and the villain too obvious. I guessed it way before we even got to the attempted murders. So, for VH it is a little disappointing.

The story is well researched, and interesting if a bit too descriptive in some places. However, the mispronunciation of so many words was very distracting. Please have someone else narrate this book, or (at the very least) have the narrator learn the pronunciation of Hindustani words. These can be looked up on the internet. For example: "Lunyo" instead of "LunJOR" was so annoying. If it was a word that wasn't used regularly it wouldn't have been so irritating. Unfortunately, the Hindustani pronunciations were so atrocious and so repetitive. Audible should have this book re-recorded, it deserves it.

Fun if predictable, but narrator mispronounced many words. I am a big fan of Jane Aiken Hodge, so I didn't mind too much the mispronunciation. Audible should edit narrations for errors though.
