Historia
> The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

HORRIBLE WOKE HATRED WRAPPED UP IN A 1920s WRAPPER
Revisado: 08-27-24
Very Disappointing. Contemporary, liberal and profuely woke diatribe wrapped up in another decades shiny wrapper. The book should be retitled, "I Hate all Wholesome Conservatives". Ive returned 2 titles in the last 2 years, both for being poorly written and not because of subject matter- Although I only had this book 2 days, I was not able to return- and that is based soley on the tone and agenda of this book. Wonder why, Audible??I am very sad the woke agenda has infiltrated Audible to this point- their viewpoint is literally being rammed down our throats. I had no idea Elizabeth McGovern was like this. All her dvds went in the trash. If you have any intelligence and know whats going on in our culture, you will recognize this drivel for what it is- propaganda.

Historia
To the Chinese the dragon is not an evil creature, but is a god and the friend of men who worship him. He "holds in his power prosperity and peace." Ruling the waters and the winds, he sends the good rain, is hence the symbol of fecundity. In the Hsia dynasty two dragons fought a great duel until both disappeared, leaving only a fertile foam from which were born the descendants of the Hsia. Thus, the dragons came to be looked upon as the ancestors of a race of heroes. This is the story of China at War.

Second only to The Good Earth!
Revisado: 08-18-24
If you have never read any Pearl S. Buck, I would suggest starting with this first. You will learn to love the family in this book. It is a very astute depiction of what war and strife brings to people on a personal level-and you really feel for these characters.. I couldn't help comparing the turmoil in the United States with what this family is going through as the war on culture escalates by their enemy. I see many markers in what happens to these characters and what is coming to us all in the US if changes are not made, and soon. For this reason, the book is actually very frightening when you make comparisons to our period of time. China 100 years ago and America 2024-who would think they could be so different and so very alike? Anyway, loved the book. Ms. Buck leaves you with hope for the future in the ending but there are some unresolved story lines that I wish had been sewn up-but that's just Buck, always leaves you wanting more! Highly Recommend as a primer for Buck, unless you are 12-then you should read, "The Big Wave" first. Which was my first Buck book back in 1975 as a kid.

Historia
Young Peony is sold into a rich Chinese household as a bondmaid - an awkward role in which she is more a servant, but less a daughter. As she grows into a lovely, provocative young woman, Peony falls in love with the family's only son. However, tradition forbids them to wed. How she resolves her love for him and her devotion to her adoptive family unfolds in this profound tale, based on true events in China over a century ago.

Not just for the ladies!
Revisado: 08-18-24
I have avoided this Pearl Buck book for years. I thought it would be feminine and for some reason, dreary because of the extended subject matter. I was wrong. Very intelligent, insightful and strangely calming. I would recommend this to an older audience who understands from experience, life does not work out as you plan, but as it should. I dont think I would have enjoyed this ending as a young person but enjoyed very much now that I am an old coot- 60. There is a serenity and understanding in the ending which is very poignant. Loved it.

Put it on 1.25 speed. Trust me.
Revisado: 03-19-24
You have to survive the set up of the first 3 chapters before it gets good. I listened to the first three and said, "next" and stopped listening to it for 4 books. I circled back around and am very glad I did. Chapter four weedles into your brain and by chapter 7 you are yelling, "Shut up, Can't you see Im listening to a book!?" at your grandkids. Good from there on and it only gets better and better. Excellent core characters and wonderful secondary characters. Only complaint-the author kind of 'shopping lists' you as to what is going on and you really have to pay attention to who is doing and saying what in a group of 20 or so people. To sum up-You feel like an old friend has just said, "Good Bye" when the book ends-a bit sad they're gone, but happy by the visit. Will reread. Loved it.

Clever and well thought out. Time travel with a twist. Will reread it! The time continuum paradox is streamlined and not clunky and over explained like similar books I have read in the genre. Couple of twists that leave you wrung out and really upset. Worth a peek!
