Historia
Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's premier lady detective, is a little short on help. The codirector of the agency, Grace Makutsi, is busy with her own case, her client none other than their erstwhile assistant, Mr. Polopetsi, who has unwittingly involved himself in a pyramid scheme. The agency's other assistant, Charlie, may also need more help than he can offer, as he is newly embroiled in a romance with a glamorous woman about whom the others have their doubts.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

very British, humor and all
Revisado: 11-15-23
Two reviewers said this had a slow start. I didn't have that experience. Characters are so well developed and description so detailed it felt like I had traveled back in time. I liked the narration a lot, though there were a few minor editing flaws. All around great read!

Historia
When facing a moral dilemma, Isabel Dalhousie--Edinburgh philosopher, amateur detective, and title character of a series of novels by best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith - often refers to the great twentieth-century poet W. H. Auden. This is no accident: McCall Smith has long been fascinated by Auden. Indeed, the novelist, best known for his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, calls the poet not only the greatest literary discovery of his life but also the best of guides on how to live.

a loving tribute to a great poet.
Revisado: 01-16-22
This well written exploration of Auden's work gives a clear picture of Auden and his motivations. The author also shares examples of Auden's writing that are especially important to the author and why they matter to him. I wish he had included readings of entire poems every time rather than some of the time.

Fascinating historical novel about Tussian gulag
Revisado: 12-29-21
This the first novel I have read set in a Russian prison camp in Siberia during the post world War II Stalin Era. The author uses memories of Hitler's camps to clarify differences and illustrate the c objections between the experiences. Focusing on hope and telling the story of one person who survives makes the story of the horrors tolerable to read. outstanding work!
