Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

A glorious read, a piece of art from a truly gifted, very hard working, smart & loving woman.
Revisado: 11-24-23
The only thing that I disliked was that she didn't promise to write more! Her stories were charming & entertaining, a timeline through some of the most important chapters of our history & art. Her strength, wit, intelligence & soul shine beautiful light on the world. Thank you, dear Barbra. You are a gift.

Too many cliches. Common adjectives, nothing startling, not thought provoking, engaging or emotionally compelling. For me.

Every spare moment in the last 4 days drew me back to listen to this special book. Rereading portions just to savor the story! These 3 characters are beautiful, flawed, filled with grace and their pain moved me to tears.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Three hours too long

Irritatingly repetitive sentences, descriptions, adjectives. I would not recommend this book to anyone. The narrator did a fine job. Especially considering she had to repeat the same sentences/information over and over while trying to make it sound fresh.

Story is better than narrator
Revisado: 07-05-22
Story is better than the irritating narrator for Simon. I enjoy the flavor of the supernatural in the author's books. The gentleman who portrayed Simon had odd speech habits, artificial sounding pronunciations with an odd uptick at the end of many words.

Elf and Yoli are sisters. While on the surface Elfrieda's life is enviable (she's a world-renowned pianist, glamorous, wealthy, and happily married,) and Yolandi's a mess (she's divorced and broke, with two teenagers growing up too quickly), they are fiercely close - raised in a Mennonite household and sharing the hardship of Elf's desire to end her life.

The narrator was perfection for this tale. I was enchanted by this story. Have listened to the end twice so far and will do it again. So many nuances, descriptions, nuggets of hard learned & earned wisdom are worth rereading for more depth. I recommend this book.

They are the Beautiful Ones, Loisail’s most notable socialites, and this spring is Nina’s chance to join their ranks, courtesy of her well-connected cousin and his calculating wife. But the Grand Season has just begun, and already Nina’s debut has gone disastrously awry. She has always struggled to control her telekinesis- neighbors call her the Witch of Oldhouse - and the haphazard manifestations of her powers make her the subject of malicious gossip. When entertainer Hector Auvray arrives to town, Nina is dazzled.

Disappointedly trite
Revisado: 04-21-22
Mexican Gothic was so enjoyable that I tried this one. It was formulaic and read like a young adult bodice ripper. The narrator made it even worse with a repeating up and down cadence...high pitched for excitement and a deeper, solemn tone for more portentous dialog.
