Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Much needed

The plus is Insight into a subject and world we know nothing about. Her humor and cynicism at times goes too far when dealing with her subject. Especially her chapter on dead babies. It was not until the epilogue that she showed her human side and reflected on the beauty of life. I host a Death Cafe and am well read on the subject of death. I will recommend it to my DC attendees.

Completely unlikeable protagonist.

Character flaws that were naive and cliched. No redemption until the epilogue and too little too late.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Tedious at times, but great story. Not being competitive myself I was amazed by the testosterone driven players (including the author) who were so affected by losses. But amazing to journey into that world. Called to mind MOONWALKING WITH EINSTEIN.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

I love a book that is even better the second time. The mystery and magnificence of the story and it's visual landscape is so intriguing. Understanding, and not understanding, is a tricky device, and here it is done masterfully. Would love to see it as a movie.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Creative Voice-Green Light
Revisado: 02-06-23
I've enjoyed his work so wanted to listen to his book. I found its strength lay in his unique poetic/prose writing style. Would be interesting if he wrote a screenplay in this style. A mythically modern take on Shakespeare and Greek chorus. His rhythm, alliteration, and cadence brought his biography to another level. At times his overuse of multiple words, when one could have been more impactful, sounded like a thesaurus. But eventually I forgave him for that as he hit his stride and revealed his very original literary voice. Not sure his life alone could have carried the narrative if written in a colloquial style. Glad to have listened.

I’ve read the hard copy and listened to it twice. Such a mastery of language, character, narrative, story structure, and the cultural intelligentsia. The last chapter has a few of the most quotable sections on life, art and beauty.
