Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

A tremendous biography of Grant
Revisado: 01-03-19
Not only was this another Chernow masterpiece, but I received a well needed and outstanding education on the Reconstruction period. I did not know that Grant championed the very first Civil Rights movement that was afterwards overrun and delayed by Washington politics until 1964 and 1965. But I also received a much clearer and in-depth appreciation for this great American. Chernow accurately and honestly addresses Grant's alcohol problem and puts many myths and falsehoods to bed. What a true and brilliant general Grant was and such a compassionate and sincere politician. Mark Bramhall is an outstanding narrator!

An original an incredible story.
Revisado: 01-03-19
Many time travel stories are too predictable, but A Gift of Time is very unique. I could never predict what was going to happen next. The twists and turns of the story keep you glued to it. It is quite scientific but not over your head. The author's concept of going back in time, changing history, but not erasing the future you know is quite different and allows for a spell binding plot. Christopher Lane does an outstanding job of narration.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

A Tale of Two Types of Characters
Revisado: 08-22-17
It is one thing to imagine being lost at sea and shipwrecked on an island fearful of never being rescued. But to endure day to day and maintain hope and purpose, then to finally take matters into your own hands takes strength of character, determination, and leadership. Yet on the same island, another set of sailors experience disaster due to their own weakness and hopelessness. It is incredible to read about the strength of the human spirit. These men relied on their faith which did not let them down. The story is narrated very well which always enhances the experience.

Historia
Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of 12 American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

An incredible Story
Revisado: 08-22-17
Dean King has done an excellent job with this story by weaving together two accounts by the survivors to portray a vivid picture of the ordeal of the survivors of the brig The Commerce. It is well narrated. A true account, it is written like an adventure story with twists and turns, deceptions among the Arabs and boldness and risk taking by Captain James Riley whose daring saved them.

Lacks a compelling plot
Revisado: 06-11-17
A very unique idea but I kept waiting for the suspense, excitement or drama to kick in and it never did. I did not enjoy the authors sense of humor injected into his different "bobs". I can accept that the author is anti-religious and that many science fiction writers either ignore religion in order to create their stories or marginalize it. But this author made religion the bad guys, the intolerant ones, the "1984" types. I found that to be very insulting and unnecessary.

The Crusades is an authoritative, accessible single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. Thomas Asbridge - a renowned historian who writes with "maximum vividness" (Joan Acocella, The New Yorker) - covers the years 1095 to 1291 in this big, ambitious, listenable account of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

Revisado: 02-08-17
I think the subtitle is well deserved "The Authoritative History...". This was truly one of the best history books I have ever read. The author is expert in his knowledge of the Crusades and lays out each crusade with superb detail. It is history but reads like a story or novel. The narrator is excellent. He reads without effort and his sentences flow through the story. I not only enjoyed the experience, but feel I received a class A education on the subject. Well Done!

Historia
In her acclaimed 1993 book, Denying the Holocaust, Deborah Lipstadt called David Irving, a prolific writer of books on World War II, "one of the most dangerous spokespersons for Holocaust denial". The following year, after Lipstadt's book was published in the United Kingdom, Irving led a libel suit against Lipstadt and her publisher. Denial, previously published as History on Trial, is Lipstadt's riveting, blow-by-blow account of this singular legal battle.

I could never understand even the existence of holocaust denial. Liebstadt's book and her heroic defense is truly educational and monumental in defeating not just Irving but all Holocaust deniers whether they accept that or not. Nicely narrated and well written.

Historia
In the opening volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick turns his keen eye to pre-Revolutionary Boston and the spark that ignited the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party and the violence at Lexington and Concord, the conflict escalated and skirmishes gave way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was the bloodiest conflict of the revolutionary war, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.

An Excellent account of the battle of Bunker Hill
Revisado: 08-27-16
Philbrick puts the battle in great context in expertly describing all the events leading up to it and more. I had to slog through the narration though. Very monotone and amateurish. He focuses too much on enunciation and misses the drama.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
