Historia
In 1990, IBM had its most profitable year ever. By 1993, the company was on a watch list for extinction, victimized by its own lumbering size, an insular corporate culture, and the PC era IBM had itself helped invent.

Awesome Audio Business Bio - My Personal Favorite
Revisado: 09-17-19
My personal all-time favorite. It may not connect with everyone, but is a great business bio about the former CEO of IBM. The book tells the story of IBM at the peak of it's decline in the early 90's and the lengths the CEO and other executives went to stabilize and turn the company around. Well written and perfectly read by Edward Herrman (Actor from Lost Boys, Annie, Richie Rich, etc).
The story starts with Mr. Gerstner being recruited into IBM (despite not having a tech background) to turn the giant around in the early '90's. The company was set to be broken apart to sell off the various divisions prior to his arrival. Once on the playing field, Mr Gerstner ultimately decides to keep the company together. Plenty of acknowledgements of other executives with numerous stories and learning points for the reader.
A bit dated today in a few areas, but the story and strategy takeaways hold up just as good today as they did back then. Should a required read (or listen) for any MBA candidate. Highly recommend.

There are an endless number of sales books that purport to let the reader in on the secrets of great selling. And many of them even have useful ideas and tips. But it doesn't matter how many tricks a salesperson has at hand if he or she doesn't have the one most important weapon in any salesperson's arsenal: the motivation to get out there and sell!Rhetorical tricks and clever devices, even if they're occasionally effective, don't make great salespeople; hard-working, self-motivated, optimistic people do.

A Great Listen - Motivating Again and Again
Revisado: 09-17-19
I solid sales book that is entertaining and uplifting. It's read by the author who is a motivational speaker so all the voice inflections are in the right spots. I must have listened to this book 15 times over the years that I've had it. Not perfect, but a solid listen that I have recommended to my team and co-workers on multiple occasions. I just purchased his management audio book just now and have high hopes for it. Get the book - I don't think you will regret it.
Warren if your out there - I hope to be able to see you live some day.

Historia
Longtime Dollar General CEO Cal Turner, Jr. shares his extraordinary life as heir to the company founded by his father Cal Turner, Sr. and his grandfather, a dirt farmer turned Depression-era entrepreneur. Cal's narrative is at its heart a father-son story, from his childhood in Scottsville, Kentucky, where business and family were one, to the triumph of reaching the Fortune 300 - at the cost of risking that very father/son relationship. Cal shares how the small-town values with which he was raised helped him guide Dollar General from family enterprise to national powerhouse.

Only So-So - A Book About the Turner Family
Revisado: 09-17-19
I love business books and devour them - especially bios from successful executives. As a business book - this one was only so-so. In a nutshell, the book is the story of the family that created Dollar General. The book should have been renamed - All About The Turner Family. Very few business bios that I read are all about just one person or one family - this one is. There are only a couple of mentions of other Dollar General executives in this book leading one to believe that Cal Turner Jr, his father, and his brother basically were solely responsible for making DG a success. Pretty amazing and sad given the thousands of employees that work for DG.
The audio book is read by the author and is painfully slow - I had to put it on 1.25 speed to even be able to listen to it. The country "aw-shucks" story telling is a bit of a stretch. The reader is left to believe that Dollar General didn't have any strategy or logistics planning until sometime in the '90's. Makes for an entertaining story, but just not very realistic since he went to Vanderbilt. Also, leads the reader to believe that only Cal Turner, Jr. could have led the company out of wilderness - again a bit of stretch considering the amount of people in their organization. All and all not a bad book, but don't expect a lot of business insights or learnings. That being said, there were a few, but they could have been distilled down to a single page of the book: Don't work with family, don't cook the books, sell what the customer wants to buy, buy cheap when you can, keep shrink to a minimum, etc.
Many books I listen to again and again. This book was a one and done for me.

Good on audio - Better in book form
Revisado: 01-01-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - great practical insight on how to start and/or take a business to the next level. There are also several nuggets that can be applied to the corporate work world as well.
This is one of the few times that I actually recommend getting the book vs. the audio book. Don't get me wrong - the audio is good, but just read a little too fast for my taste as compared to other business books. The printed version had more of a punch to it.
What does Dave Ramsey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Real world experience from running a highly successful company.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Tell Dave to slow down the next time he decides to read one of his books - the pace was a little too fast as compared to other business books.
