Stiglitz has offered a clear treatise on how our economic system that has dominated world economics for over 70 years has delivered a system where wealth and the power it delivers has damaged our society, our democracy, and our sense of right and wrong to such a degree that some change is needed before we fall into outright fascism. Our tolerance of inequity, and the grievances that it creates have been distorted by media, political perspectives, and political funding to the advantage of the wealthy and powerful to the detriment of less advantaged even those who might be considered privileged but to a lesser degree.

I have read his last three books and enjoyed his insights and have always enjoyed his political commentary even when I’m some degree of disagreement. In retirement I was hesitant to purchase this book out of fear of being prompted by a consistently successful author on how to move my life forward from here. What I received instead was a well seasoned perspective on how to more effectively be compassionate, be interested in exploring others meaningfully, and be more engaging and curious. His delivery as well as the content is delivered with a delightful humor, and humility and emphasis as is so well expressed through his own reading of the book. I even wonder if the printed edition could adequately convey the passion with which I enjoyed the reading. I will share this perspective with as many as I can in the hope of engendering more meaningful conversations and connections with others.

It has been over 50 years but if these perspectives were more prevalent then I am sure I would have enjoyed psychology a great deal more. These concepts are much more credible and address more questions about human behavior than were prevalent in my years at school.

The history reiterated from How Democracy fails is more deeply diagnosed and calls forth what is needed from everyone and how everything needs to be questioned and resolved. The malaise originally suggested by President Jimmy Carter is now more prevalent and more deeply realized that to fail to correct spells tragedies we beyond our imagination. The need to act urgently is illuminated by this treatise.

Although long and dense with details, I was struck by the thoughtfulness, considered exploration of varying opinions, and self reflection exhibited by this book. It was never boring and instead moved quickly through vignettes of wide ranging topics and responsibilities of the high office of the President. How striking a contrast of a person so committed to his oath of office and that of our latest person to occupy it. I can’t wait for the second volume of his term to learn in such stunning depth his wisdom and perseverance.

I have long paid attention to the budget debates and wondered how to manage a position most favorable to social justice issues. This book has educated me on a perspective I was not fully aware of. I had understood to some degree the value of raising the deficit during tough times but MMT has explained that a complete reorientation of government spending is in order. That we must establish what we value and design our expenditures in accordance and get away from the false premises and myths that we must pay as we go to avoid fiscal crisis.
