Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Authentic and haunting
Revisado: 11-18-24
Though I've read many many titles, histories, and historical fiction concerning the Vietnam War, none have captured the feel of being in-country as this one. My service was of a vastly different sort, I lived with the Vietnamese in a remote outpost on the rivers of Quang Nam province as a naval advisor and saw my share of combat. . Nonetheless, the deeply personal experiences of destruction, chaos, alienation, and trauma portrayed in this fictional account are strikingly consonant with my own.
I have reread this novel twice now and it has resurrected memories, many bittersweet, neatly tucked away in a manner best described as therapeutic. For that, I'm deeply grateful to Ms. Hannah.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Another Kate/Saskia triumph
Revisado: 08-14-24
This wonderful combination of writer/narrator triumphs once again! What a wonderful melange of fascinating characters set in an era often characterized as idyllic, yet one in which a sinister darkness always lurked nearby. Against this backdrop, this disparate group of women find comfort and joy in each other's company and establish the true meaning of family with each other.
Superbly narrated and brilliantly written.

Unbeatable
Revisado: 08-10-24
This thoroughly male reader, a combat veteran, whose tastes tend to run to crisp true to life war stories has become a devoted Kate Quinn/Saskia Maaleveld fan.
Beautifully descriptive writing (without being flowery) combined with Maaleveld's exquisite voicing make this formidable duo unbeatable to listen to. Rest assured I will listen to all the books these two provide.

A novel and successful approach to storytelling
Revisado: 07-14-24
A novel approach to storytelling and this cohort of authors executed their missions admirably. I appreciate the difficult task of editing to make sure the overarching storyline is preserved and well articulated. Knowing the mystery of this chapter of British history is opaque, I enjoyed each author’s interpretation from his/her viewpoint. As always Saskia Maarleveld’s narration was a delight to the ears.
