Great narration, meandering plot
Revisado: 08-15-24
I like the characters, their interactions and dialogue.. the action is well presented and appropriate to the setting.. although a lot what happens is inferred or ignored. Like… how did the night lords infiltrate the fortress? Why not show the battle that killed the Covenant, why skip to the end? .. there’s lots of fade to black moments that feel like a way for the author to avoid writing more detailed scenes.
Overall, aside from the action, not much really happens. Nothing is truly achieved.. just a bunch of nothing that leaves the plot in the same place where it began, although with some differences.
This series has been a bit disappointing on a macro scale, but decent on a micro scale.

Very informative, great banter. I Can’t wait to listen to more, I love hearing from their personal experiences. I wonder how much of this could translate to sim racing

Jax is a pretty regular guy, has a job he tolerates, a girl he kinda, sorta loves...and he fights creatures from the UnderVerse in his sleep, leaving him covered in horrific scars when he wakes up. When his brother vanishes, and five years later he's kidnapped as well, he's given a stark choice by his asshat of a father: Go to the UnderVerse in reality, travel to the capitol of that ruined realm at the center of reality, and open a portal for the Noble Houses to return home...or die.

Shallow to comically bad
Revisado: 04-10-23
I realize now that there is a second version of this audiobook which doesn’t hand Wayne putting on a brutalized Australian accent for 2 hours straight, and I have to say… I think that’s a shame. Although jarring and bad enough to dispel any immersion, after a while it actually became somewhat endearing, and then pretty funny. By the end I enjoyed Wayne’s valiant attempt at Bogarde for just how bad and tortured it was. It had a charm. It’s a shame that is gone now.
Overall, the story is very bland and far too long. 20 hours is ridiculous for what actually happens in the book. It’s a short story at best, but the overly explained rpg mechanics and fight scenes really, really drag it out.
The protagonist is horrible, unfunny and misogynistic, as is the story in general. Female characters exist to service the protagonist, or to dump exposition. Characters are one dimensional, there’s no variety of dialogue, all the male characters talk the same and all the female characters do too.
The fight scenes are decent and well described, though a bit repetitive. The RPG elements were a lead weight on the story, dragging it down and bogging it in parts. Especially the times when Jax was checking his HUD. Good lord. Maybe cut the RPG elements in half, trim off the bloat and develop characters and dialogue more and this book might actually be worth your time.

Historia
In Minatsol, being a dweller means that you are literally no better than dirt. In fact, dirt might actually be more useful than Willa. Her life will be one of servitude to the sols, the magic-blessed beings who could one day be chosen to become gods. At least her outer village is far removed from the cities of the sols, and she won't ever be forced to present herself to them... Until one small mistake changes everything, and Willa is awarded a position to serve at Blesswood, the top sol academy in the world - a position that she definitely did not earn.

bland at best
Revisado: 02-02-22
The story is predictable and full of tropes. The MC is far too naive and conceited to be taken seriously. She's 18 but has the emotional maturity of a 9 year old. Most serious moments and events (such as being wounded) are shrugged off and ignored, as are a few plot points which just vanish (such as her pretending to be a boy). The authors lean on repetitive descriptions to push scenes along and what descriptions we get are superficial at best. The use of cliches is tiresome... I found that I could space out and miss entire segments of the story and still be able to follow it, not ever having missed anything of any real importance. The dialogue is quirky, which I suppose is a saving grace. The macro plot lacks any gravitas which leaves the entire thing feeling impotent, and the twist at the end is eye-roll worthy.
in saying that there were a few good moments, like diamonds in the rough. A few quality jokes and some genuinely funny slapstick skits were sprinkled throughout the story. I enjoyed the brothers and their interactions with each other over any interaction with the mc. In fact I'd rather read a book about them tbh. Overall I'd give this a miss unless you're a 12 year old.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Felt like young adult anime
Revisado: 04-15-21
This to me is average. Granted it's an off-Standard 'chosen one' story which is pretty nice. The only thing that truly shines here is Brandon's magic mechanics and fight scenes, everything else is fairly generic. I can't help but get a strong young adult fiction vibe from this story given how ankle deep the characters and their interactions are. The world itself is hardly described and left to your own interpretation most of the time.. which I normally appreciate but in this case it felt like it needed more effort. Much of the dialogue is pure exposition and many side characters exist for this sole purpose. The plot is average and the twist at the end felt luke warm.
Overall it felt like I was reading an anime set in a vague medieval european countey. it was an okay book and enough of an experience to make me want book 2.

You said you'd listen to your favorite narrators read anything: Well, this ambrosial new audiobook brings together an acclaimed cast of narrators to read aloud the menus of some of our favorite local restaurants here at Audible headquarters in Newark, New Jersey, as only they know how. You haven't truly lived, or dined, until you've heard Cassandra Campbell capture the emotional nuances of Newark's best Indian-inflected burgers or let Nick Podehl extol the virtues of the pear arugula salad and then seductively steer you toward a plate of creamy mushroom linguini.

Revisado: 03-30-18
Amazing writing, characters and story. love the dark angels, my only criticism is that this title is included in the Horus Heresy series when it clearly isn't related at all, not even mentioned. these events happen long before the launching of 63rd Expedition, before Ullanor, before there was even a Warmaster.

There better be a sequel.
Revisado: 10-01-17
The quality of the narrative caught me off guard, as did January's flawless storytelling. Mother Go is unique and traditional at the same time, and once it had me hooked it didn't let me go until I had finished it.
There's something nostalgic about this production, as though it harkens back to the golden age of radio sci-fi - something i sadly never experienced.
I absolutely recommend this, unless scifi isn't your thing. If it is, this is a MUST OWN.
