Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Wow, big letdown
Revisado: 12-01-17
What disappointed you about Artemis?
Pretty much everything. The main character, Jazz, is not the least bit interesting. I would never have guessed she was 26 until she said so. She had the demeanor and behavior of 14 year old. Using the moon as the backdrop is an interesting choice, but felt unrealistic in context. It will take centuries to colonize the moon, why would inhabitants still use 21st century slang? The plot is dull and forced. The setup is drawn out and the conclusion is truncated. The only thing that keeps this from being a total disaster is Rosario Dawson's performance. She really deserved better.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Dawson was the best thing about Artemis, but she delivered some of book's one lines with such contempt, it took me right out of the experience. Jazz had so many "Poochie" lines, I think Dawson just got sick of them after a while.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Dawson, and there seemed to be an attempt to stay somewhat true to the science. That I respected. But, all in all, it was kind of a mess.

Historia
"Houston, we've had a problem here." On the evening of April 13, 1970, the three astronauts aboard Apollo 13 were just hours from the third lunar landing in history. But as they soared through space, two hundred thousand miles from earth, an explosion badly damaged their spacecraft. With compromised engines and failing life-support systems, the crew was in incomparably grave danger.

Interesting subject, but really dry
Revisado: 09-11-17
What did you like best about Thirteen? What did you like least?
As I was listening to this factual retelling of the Apollo 13 disaster, it was difficult to separate this work from the film "Apollo 13." Most of the time, I found myself impressed at how much the movie got right. The book keeps the technical jargon to a minimum, but it goes overboard with uninteresting asides. The movie, though much more dramatized, is a more streamlined and engaging endeavor.
Would you be willing to try another book from Henry Cooper? Why or why not?
Yeah, sure, but I would approach it with more reservations
What three words best describe J. Paul Guimont’s voice?
Capable, solid, sincere
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
It was a movie and I did see it. In fact, I'd recommend to just watch Apollo 13 instead if, like me, you were only casually interested in this subject.

Historia
The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

Epic in scope and high in quality
Revisado: 09-11-17
If you could sum up Lucifer's Hammer in three words, what would they be?
Adventurous, exciting, profound
What other book might you compare Lucifer's Hammer to and why?
Not a book, but the movie "Deep Impact" kept popping in my head as I listened to this. The comet strike occurs in the middle of the book, so the second half may be compared to a dystopian novel like "The Road," but not nearly as bleak.
Which character – as performed by Marc Vietor – was your favorite?
There are many characters here, and Veitor does a good job of helping you keep everyone straight.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, not possible. It's 25 hours long. It took me about five days. I did want to listen to more because it was so intriguing, but still five days for a book this length is pretty quick.
Any additional comments?
"Lucifer's Hammer" covers a lot of ground, both in plot and theme. There's a lot to digest, and may even require a second (or even third) read to get it all. But it's worth it. This is one of the best sci-fi disaster novels I've ever read.

Historia
Sometimes the worst storms aren't from Mother Nature, and sometimes the worst nightmares aren't the ones in our heads. Mike Mitchell, an average New Yorker already struggling to keep his family together, suddenly finds himself fighting just to keep them alive when an increasingly bizarre string of disasters starts appearing on the world's news networks. As both the real world and the cyber world come crashing down, bending perception and reality, a monster snowstorm cuts New York off from the world, turning it into a wintry tomb where nothing is what it seems.

Disappointing natural disaster story
Revisado: 07-31-17
Would you try another book from Matthew Mather and/or Tom Taylorson?
Probably not, this book felt like a bait-and-switch, so I doubt I would.
Would you ever listen to anything by Matthew Mather again?
Again, doubtful.
What three words best describe Tom Taylorson’s voice?
Tough, stern, solid
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
It read like the book was auditioning to be a movie. The characters were thin, the situations over dramatized and the dialogue was cliche-filled.
Any additional comments?
As others have said, the "Cyber" in the title is just a hook to reel you in. This is mostly a survival story, and a pretty mediocre one at that.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

A surprising, emotional sequel to "The Shining"
Revisado: 10-11-14
If you could sum up Doctor Sleep in three words, what would they be?
strong, patient storytelling
What did you like best about this story?
stephen king really builds good relationships in doctor sleep, even the new heroes get a well-rounded backstory that makes their decisions more effective and give them more emotional weight
What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?
everything, patton was absolutely awesome, i firmly believe listening to patton is the best way to experience this book
Who was the most memorable character of Doctor Sleep and why?
well, danny is the bridge between the shining and this sequel, and he is very compelling, his story of redemption is the most surprising thing about this book, i actually cried at the end, didn't expect that
Any additional comments?
this could have been a disaster, but king really delivers a great sequel. I will say that the villains here are a bit cartoonish, and the climatic battle is over in just a couple of pages, but the real strength of the book is the relationship between danny and the other characters with the shining. that is smartly the focus of the majority of the book and it is very poignant and effective

Surprisingly hilarious!
Revisado: 06-20-10
I must admit that I have been burned by "blogger books" before, so I was very skeptical about this one, a book based on a Twitter sensation. While the Sh*t Mt Dad Says is the only thing I actually like about Twitter, I couldn't help but think that this book would get stale really quick. Halpern, it turns out, is a pretty great writer. He has a great knack for comic timing and dialog (which, obviously, he got from his father) and understands and conveys the complexities of the father-son dynamic with some terrific anecdotes. In fact, I enjoyed Halpern's stories far more than the short quotes dispersed throughout the book. As far as the narrator goes, he reminded me of Ben Stiller, which seemed sort of appropriate, although the gruff "dad voice" takes some getting used to.

Revisado: 04-30-10
This was an extremely entertaining listen. Honestly, this is one of those books I'm glad I listened to versus reading. Very dramatic, lots of atmosphere, with plenty of good, creepy twists. The narrator was superb. My only complaint is the lack of depth. Defines scary ride. 3.5 stars

Everything Is A Plot Twist!
Revisado: 12-18-09
If, like me, you were drawn to "Everything Matters" by the description of the novel as a story of a man who knows when the world will end, you may be disappointed by the initial few hours of the book. The obtuse style of the novel takes a while to get used to, and, for me, never completely gels, but it eventually reveals a family drama with world destruction as distant backstory. The biggest problem I had with "Matters" is its relentless need to prove itself, piling on quirk after quirk, plot twist after plot twist until, frankly, I just didn't care anymore. That's not life, that's melodrama. Currie gains some redemption with a heartfelt third act, but it's too little, too late for this reader to recommend the book without reservations. The voice cast, for the most part, is excellent.
