Classic King, Poor Narration

Vintage Stephen King. Masterful storytelling. But the narrator? Although generally crisp and clean with his reading, he needs to learn ONE DOES NOT NEED TO YELL DURING SCARY OR INTENSE PARTS. The emotion/tension is conveyed through the author's words, not by TRIPLING THE VOLUME OF THE NARRATOR'S VOICE. So distracting from the tale being told. One would be better off just reading a hard copy.

Near Perfection

Bought this audio book four years ago. The wisdom it contains is priceless. Also, the narrator makes you feel like you're sitting in a room with Seneca. No exaggeration, I've listened to this at least a dozen times. Anyone would do well to own it. If I could give a copy to every human on the planet, I would.

Best Potter Audio Version

Like a kindly uncle or grandfather reasing, Stephen Fry's narration is priceless. A wortheile addition to anyone's audio library.

Dale's version has many good points, as well as some major flaws. But this version by Stephen Fry? Like having a kindly uncle or grandfather reading it to you. A worthwhile addition to anyone's library.

Unlistenable

Christopher Hitchens was one of the finest minds of the late 20th/early 21st centuries and he deserves a worthy narrator. That is not the case with this title and I'll have to get it in hard copy, for the narration was so slow and lifeless it became unbearably painful. I couldn't even finish. I recommend works read by the author himself or Simon Prebble.

Brilliant Story Marred Narrator Faults

As usual, masterful storytelling by Mr. King. There's even a part where he lends his voice to the recording, and I'll treasure that forever. As for the narration? Wayyyyyy too slow. Had to bump the speed up to 1.20x to stay sane. Also, the narrator had that upturn at the end of sentences, making them sound like questions, that so many young people use today. Annoying. But, vocalization of secondary characters was excellent.

Brilliant and Essential

Have been a huge Potter fan for years. The movies are good, but obviously less detailed than the books, and not every actor is good. The Dale audio books are fine, but he makes every minor character sound drunk or as having a speech impediment. The other German Potter audio books are atrocious and unlistenable. But these by Manteuffel are absolutely brilliant on every level. I originally purchased them to help with my German language studies, but now consider them definitive Potter works, even better than anything in English. Thank you!

Narration Could Use Improvement

Have read the books, seen the films, and listened to the audio books more times than I can remember. Finally realized what I have always found lacking with Mr. Dale's narration. He does well with main characters. But as for the secondary characters? Rather than consistently working with pitch and tempo, he just gives many secondary characters what sounds like bloated tongues and speech impediments. Luna Lovegood and Ginny Potter don't sound like teenaged girls, but 60 year old chain-smoking barflies. And it is painful to listen to his interpretation of Madam Maxim. I wish they'd go back and re-dub those voices properly.

If you speak German, I highly recommend the audio book versions narrated by Felix von Manteuffel. His narrative work is spot-on brilliant.

Schmerzhaft - Manteuffel ist überlegen

Habe diese Version aus Versehen heruntergeladen. Ich dachte, ich würde es versuchen. Das war ein Fehler. Die Interpretation so vieler Charaktere durch den Erzähler war sehr schlecht und oft schmerzhaft (Hagrid, Dobby, Umbridge, Moody). Ich konnte nicht weitermachen und plane, die Felix von Manteuffel-Version herunterzuladen. Er versteht das Harry-Potter-Reich. Wenn ich mein Audible-Guthaben für diese Version zurückbekommen könnte, würde ich es tun.

Brilliant Performance

I wish Mr. Franco would record the entirety of Stephen King's catalogue. This was one of the most exquisitely crafted readings of an audio book I've ever heard.
