Historia
The American Revolution was a home-front war that brought scarcity, bloodshed, and danger into the life of every American, and Carol Berkin shows us that women played a vital role throughout the struggle. Berkin takes us into the ordinary moments of extraordinary lives. We see women boycotting British goods in the years before independence, writing propaganda that radicalized their neighbors, raising funds for the army, and helping finance the fledgling government. We see how they managed farms, plantations, and businesses while their men went into battle.

“Ye” is pronounced “the”
Revisado: 12-29-22
Well narrated, although the consistent mispronunciation of “ye” grated. It’s a common error, but a professional narrator should know better

Worth the time!
Revisado: 12-05-22
Excellent book, well researched. The narrator should have sought advise about how to pronounce terms in the German language. Mispronunciations were distracting

Distractedly over-enunciated German
Revisado: 01-03-21
The narrator is clearly excellent in English, but over-enunciates any and all German ways in a way that is grating. For example, the main character’s 2-syllable name (Heinrich) gains an extra syllable (becoming Hein-er-ich). This may be a minor complaint, but over the course of a 15+ hour book, it becomes a major distraction.

Historia
Between the 8th and 11th centuries, Vikings stormed out of their Scandinavian homelands to raid and loot along the coasts of Europe. In old Norse, to "go viking" meant to take to sea in a long ship for an adventure. Sometimes this was a trading trip, sometimes a piratical raid. Often it was both. Explorers and traders, warriors and poets, they ranged between Byzantium in the south and ventured as far as Iceland and even North America. Their fame lives on.

A nonfiction book that's jam-packed with facts, yet has all the narrative force of fiction. It held my children (8 & 9) spellbound.
