Historia
It’s 1971. Trash piles up on the streets, crime is at an all-time high, the city is careening towards bankruptcy, and a shooting war has broken out between the NYPD and the Black Liberation Army. Amidst this collective nervous breakdown furniture store owner and ex-fence Ray Carney tries to keep his head down and his business thriving. His days moving stolen goods around the city are over. It’s strictly the straight-and-narrow for him—until he needs Jackson 5 tickets for his daughter May and he decides to hit up his old police contact Munson, fixer extraordinaire.

Disappointing!
Revisado: 07-17-24
This was the most boring, drawn out, and uninteresting book by Colson whitehead that I have ever heard! I have tried for months to get through it, and it is just too much! The narrator is really good, but the stories are so disconnected and uninteresting that I’m floored! I’ve never given a bad review, but this was a major, major disappointment and I could only get through about half of it! Not what I normally get from this author, which makes this even more disappointing.

Historia
It began with the mysterious disappearance of Harriet Hollingsworth - Eastport, Maine's, snoopiest resident. Everyone is convinced the old busybody bolted out of town to escape her creditor - everyone except Jake and her best friend, Ellie, who suspect otherwise. But they'll need to come up with proof more sinister than a pair of abandoned binoculars. Just as Jake starts poking around for clues, things take a troubling turn for the worse.

A Winner!
Revisado: 11-15-22
This was one of my favorite Jacobia Tiptree novels yet! I read a few out of sequence and was happy to get clarity on a couple of issues that were presented on later stories. This was a winner!

Good, but not great.
Revisado: 08-15-22
The story was very good, but it got pretty bogged down in the middle when it gave a lot of the background information. Likable characters, too. Surprising ending, that I liked a lot. Good story, overall.

Historia
Penelope Grand has scrapped her failed career as an artist in Pittsburgh and moved back to Brooklyn to keep an eye on her ailing father. She's accepted that her future won't be what she'd dreamed, but now, as gentrification has completely reshaped her old neighborhood, even her past is unrecognizable. Old haunts have been razed, and wealthy white strangers have replaced every familiar face in Bed-Stuy. Even her mother, Mirella, has abandoned the family to reclaim her roots in the Dominican Republic. That took courage. It's also unforgivable.

Confused
Revisado: 08-01-22
I really didn’t like Penelope, the lead character. I couldn’t find a way to forgive her hatefulness to her mother. I didn’t understand Mirella either, but at least she tried at the end, and Penelope was either so hateful or so hurt she couldn’t get beyond the past. I guess it’s true that hurt people, hurt people.Confusing ending as well.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Poor Narrator
Revisado: 04-30-22
The story was good, but the narrator was so bad - stilted reading, frequent mispronunciations ( “explicative” instead of expletive; “she axed him” instead of asked; “constanance”instead of countenance, to name a few. Very distracting. I had to speed it up because she read so slowly, with the longest pauses between words, and awkward reading of the sentences. Thank God the story was okay, otherwise I would have been done within the first hour! Too bad…

Not a fan at all! Couldn’t make myself like any of the characters except maybe the father, who didn’t have a big part. Annie was as unloveable as they come and the whole story was depressing as hell! Just left me feeling nothing for any of it.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Thoroughly enjoyed this thrilling novel. Twists and turns galore, but nothing too odd to fit with the storyline. Narrator was very good, and kept the story moving. I’ll look for more from this author!

This was an amazing read! Made me really want to visit these and other historical places throughout the USA. This book will be shared with my adult son as a way of expanding his already deep understanding of these issues, and encouraging him to make some of these visits with me. Thank you for your research.
