Guh.
Revisado: 04-08-24
This was a good time killer, but the trope of the female lead character rocking up to a battlefield with no experience, saving everyone, then negotiating prime deals with other heads of state, getting what she thinks her whole kingdom needs (lots of insightful oversight) but that she doesn’t know she’s pregnant annoys me to no end. I give a lot of leeway in the believability of romance novels but that one just kills it. So frolicking in a garden with a sword is enough experience and training to defeat un-defeatable monster creatures, but banging a dude relentlessly for months with a guaranteed ‘fertile womb’ is shocking to find out she’s a couple months along being pregnant? To the point where her dude has already called the midwife and she still is shocked? Sure, Pam. Okie dokie.

Just the thing
Revisado: 03-20-24
This was a delight. I generally am waiting for the eye-roll ridiculous in fantasy romances and this one nailed the story and characters. Sure there’s some thing that stretch believability within the framework of the author’s world, but the thing I liked most is that the main character is believable while pulling off some very intriguing plot developments. I would even go so far to say this was better than ACOTAR or the Crescent City books.

Oh nooooooo
Revisado: 03-16-24
Have you seen memento? Where Lenny has short term amnesia and it makes him a frustrating, unreliable, but still likeable narrator? And you know he is going to make mistakes and be taken advantage of, but you see him trying to sort his story out? This lady is Lenny but doesn’t have the amnesia to blame for being a ding dong. I love a good dumpster fire but this was painful, repetitive idiotic saga. I know it is harder to critique than create, there are some elements that could have made this book at least a 3 but ding dong lady can’t pick a lane, can’t decide if she’s going to die, can’t can’t can’t can’t. The cover art is cool!

Historia
The story of poison is the story of power. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. Servants licked the royal family's spoons, tried on their underpants, and tested their chamber pots. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions.

Weird. Wonderful. Dry. Witty. Humans are so weird. The narrator is fantastic with catching the wry humor in some of the horror.

She did it again. This book is a glimpse into a different kingdom than the normal thief kingdoms but with the same twists and a little bit, maybe, of omnipotent interference. Good for settling in for just the story, or analyzing to try to figure out Gen’s endgame. It’s always Gen.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Historia
The historic hotel in Boonsboro has endured war and peace, the changing of hands, and even rumored hauntings. Now it’s getting a major face-lift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. As the architect in the family, Beckett’s social life consists mostly of talking shop over pizza and beer. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was 16.

Whaaaaaaaaat?! That's why its a free book!
Revisado: 11-08-12
Would you try another book from Nora Roberts and/or MacLeod Andrews?
Nope. The writing is like eating cardboard. Fairly sure no beneficial/interesting/romantic/or to keep with the metaphor, nutritional value whatsoever. If I were a buffalo in Yellowstone park in the middle of winter and the only option was cardboard nutritional grass (this book) I would opt in for being eaten by wolves. That was serious.
What was most disappointing about Nora Roberts’s story?
See above. And here is a little more:
card·board
[kahrd-bawrd, -bohrd]
noun
1.
a thin, stiff pasteboard, used for signs, boxes, etc.
2.
resembling cardboard, especially in flimsiness
3.
not fully lifelike; shallow; two-dimensional.
Overall: thin, stiff, flimsy, not lifelike, shallow and two dimensional.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
While a guy doing the narrating is my preference, and this one has good vocal distinction and character development, who on this entire great green earth wants to hear the nagging kid voice?! For over 5 minutes? Mother of god, no one! Really not his fault, but still.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Uhhhhhhh. Rhetorical question?
Any additional comments?
Now I see why it was free.
