Historia
Centuries from now, the basic right to expand human intelligence beyond its natural limits has become a war-worthy cause for the Demarchists and Conjoiners. Only vast lighthugger starships bind these squabbling colonies together, manned by the panicky and paranoid Ultras. And the hyperpigs just try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer. And everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations turning up on the outer reaches of settled space...because who's to say that humanity won't be next?

Bittersweet Ending to Revelation Space Universe
Revisado: 09-04-24
I have read the core trilogy and also Inhibitor Phase prior to tackling this collection of short stories. After all that suffering I guess I wanted a more upbeat ending. I hope Reynolds comes back to the series and extends the story into the far future, but it appears he is working more on prequels to the original RS trilogy,

If everyone is looking to secure a relationship with their perceived best option, then the perception of value must be at the heart of human coupling. In this groundbreaking work, psychologist Orion Taraban sets forth his economic model of relationships and exposes the often uncomfortable laws that govern the sexual marketplace. After listening to "The Value of Others," you'll never look at relationships the same way again.

Even If You've Listened to Every Episode of PsycHacks, There is a TON of New Material

Fantastic book with some deep material and themes. His final main conclusion (which I don't agree with) made me think of some sci-fi novels, such as The End of Eternity, where marriage is a contract for a set amount of time rather than a life-long commitment.

Historia
Who doesn't worry sometimes that smart phones, the Internet, and TV are robbing us of time and preventing us from having a life? How can we make the most of our time on earth? In the first century AD, the Stoic philosopher Seneca the Younger offered one of the most famous answers to that question in his essay "On the Shortness of Life"—a work that has more to teach us today than ever before.

Relevant 2,000 Years After It Was Written
Revisado: 08-19-24
A breezy translation of an ancient document. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is the author admits to changing the male focus of the text to be more inclusive. A good translator doesn't take liberties to indulge their own biases. Let the ancients be seen in their natural habitat and not one constructed by modern virtue signalers.
That being said, still worth a listen. The lament of people spending hours at the hairdresser validates the saying: "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

Historia
One of the most influential Roman perspectives on religion came from a nonreligious belief system that is finding new adherents even today: Stoicism. How did the Stoics think about religion? In How to Think About God, Philip Freeman presents vivid new translations of Cicero's On the Nature of the Gods and The Dream of Scipio. In these brief works, Cicero offers a Stoic view of belief, divinity, and human immortality, giving eloquent expression to the religious ideas of one of the most popular schools of Roman and Greek philosophy.

This is a very quick listen but is worth it for those curious about the cosmological beliefs of the late Roman Republic. Reading is clear and the translation is excellent.

Historia
Are there other dimensions beyond our own? Is time travel possible? Can we change the past? Are there gateways to parallel universes? All of us have pondered such questions, but there was a time when scientists dismissed these notions as outlandish speculations. Not any more. Today, they are the focus of the most intense scientific activity in recent memory. In Hyperspace, Michio Kaku offers the first book-length tour of the most exciting (and perhaps most bizarre) work in modern physics.

One of Kaku's Best Works!
Revisado: 08-22-23
I first read this book nearly 25 years ago and had my mind blown. It helped to spark a lifelong interest in physics, math, and their ultimate intersection with philosophy. This book, despite many of the recent developments in physics, is still worth a listen. There is an excellent discussion of how higher dimensions were regarded from ancient to modern times and the difficulty of reconciling gravity with quantum mechanics--a problem still with us.
If you like Kaku, don't even hesitate to add this one to cart. The one minus is the publisher did not make the many illustrations available via PDF. I have a print copy of the book, so I can thumb through that to refresh my memory, but a bit of a miss by the publisher.

Two leaders in the field offer a compelling analysis of the current state of the art and reveal the steps we must take to achieve a truly robust artificial intelligence. Taking inspiration from the human mind, professors Gary Marcus and Ernest Davis explain what we need to advance AI to the next level, and suggest that if we are wise along the way, we won't need to worry about a future of machine overlords. Rebooting AI provides a lucid, clear-eyed assessment of the current science and offers an inspiring vision of how a new generation of AI can make our lives better.

Cuts Through the Massive Hype Behind ML
Revisado: 04-07-20
I have gone through dozens of books on technology and AI and this book was a refreshing breath of air. It cuts through much of the hype behind machine learning and other AI techniques and helps to frame a more realistic perspective of what has been achieved and what can be achieved with existing techniques. There is a lot of healthy criticism of the current state of AI research and many practical suggestions to address existing problems.
This book is a must "read" for anyone who follows AI.

Not As Compelling as the Bobiverse
Revisado: 06-08-18
First off, I loved the Bobiverse and I think Dennis E. Taylor is a great addition to the world of sci-fi. That acknowledged, and it pains me to say this, The Singularity Trap is a miss. The narration is top-notch, but the story isn't arresting. I didn't make much of a connection with the protagonist. I also felt the dialogue wasn't riveting either. Too many times the author tells us the characters laughed at something I personally didn't laugh at. Also, referencing Star Trek was okay in the Bobiverse, but I cringed when it came up again in this book (even in passing). However, my central issue is the plot itself. I have read many books about the singularity and I don't feel the author portrayed the subject convincingly. The singularity is a huge idea, one that basically says no human being alive at this moment can fully comprehend what a post-human world would be like. It would be a universe of staggering complexity and wonders. Such grandeur wasn't really conveyed or even really hinted at. We have some gee-whiz moments, but not enough of them. This is a criticism that can be aimed at many authors. Read The Age of Spiritual Machines, Life 3.0, and Superintelligence, all non-fiction books. I wish more authors would borrow ideas from those tomes.

One of the Finest Science Fiction Novels Ever
Revisado: 02-23-18
In my opinion, this is Arthur C. Clarke's finest novel and ranks among the best science fiction novels written. EVER. It's hard to believe this was written in the early 1950's, before man walked the moon and when computers were the size of entire rooms.
The less you know about this novel before reading it, the better. Just add it to cart and get going!
