Such a good story, so well written and really excellently peeformed by the narrator. I had to go back and recheck the title because no one named Mary Russell entered the story for the longest time. Intriguing tale all the way to the end.

So refreshing to read a light mystery story written by an intelligent and educated author. And so refreshing to listen to a narrator who knows how to pronounce the language, who knows grammar, who doesn't make mistakes, and who can do (and not overdo) characters and voices.

I read these because I'm enjoying the story of Walt and Danielle -- but why does no editor tell the author that "leisurely" is an adjective? Also a corpus search for the word "shrugged" might find it's the most common word in the book. The narrator is so awful, emphasizing the wrong words in the dialogue and altering the meaning, over and over. My favorite characters are the animals.

As far as the story goes, these are perfectly enjoyable little cozy ghost mysteries. Some of the dialogue is redundant, and some of the details serve no purpose in moving the plot forward. But most of the characters are enjoyable-- with the exception of one insufferable police officer / love interest.

My objection to these books is the narration. The narrator frequently puts emphasis on the wrong word in a sentence changing the meaning of the narration and the dialogue. she also simply misreads words, mispronounces them or reads the wrong word form. I keep wondering why these mistakes haven't been edited out. isn't there any quality control?

How can anyone be expected to listen for long for long to this dreadful narrator barking like an anxious seal? It absolutely ruins whatever story might be there, so the listener can't even access any story, much less imagine a setting it have any idea who a character might be. Crowley is usually deliciously atmospheric with his use of descriptive language, both esoteric and cozy, but with this terrible narration, Crowley's voice is quite lost. How sad...

Mistakes galore. Where was the editor? for example, Constantinople wasn't called Istanbul until 1930. This story was supposed to take place circa 1912. I won't be reading anything by Joan Hess

The story is flat and without dimension. One of the worst narrators I've ever had to listen to. The voices she put on for the male characters were like nails on a chalkboard. No thank you. I cannot listen further.

As an epistolary novel, this book is in first person from more than one point of view When the letter writer is make, it's confusing and awkward to listen to this narrator. Even when reading a woman's letter, she's still too bad to listen to, with no talent for enunciation and no pacing. Take my advice and choose another version.

The author lingers for entire chapters on the disgusting job of cutting down a murdered woman who has been nailed to a door.Another entire chapter devoted to a mercy killing of a half dead torture victim under the hot sun. If this is your thing, then by all means listen. The narrator is quite talented with a textured voice that echoes hard lining and merciless elements. not my thing at all, and I'm sorry I wasted my time on this audiobook.

My favorite genre is mystery set in the southwest featuring Native American characters. And the narrator Kaipo Schwab is a favorite of mine. I love the Native characters in this book, but I'm left with a few dangling unanswered questions about a couple of others.

More than once, I was confused by a character's motivations, specifically the bad guy and the bruja in the mountains. Also, the bad guy couldn't read yet a crumpled letter in his pocket lay at the heart of his murderous rampage. His English was supposed to be cursory, just something he picked up from his prison mates, but much of his dialogue was quite advanced grammatically.

But the Native characters were amazing, I loved their practical toughness and the complex family ties, local etiquette, and bits of lore that found their way into the story.
