Overly political and boomer centric
Revisado: 01-18-23
I gave this a listen because it has been heralded as the precursor to the FI/RE (financial independence/ retire early) movement.
I'm sure it was revolutionary in 1992 and I appreciate what it did then, but there is nothing in this book that I haven't read, seen, or heard already in the personal finance sphere.
It hits all the marks for basics of personal finance, however the politically left talking points made me cringe as much as religious talking points may dissuade someone from enjoying Dave Ramsey. If that's your political leaning, you may love it but be forewarned if it is not.
The added stories of what worked for boomers in the past but are now non-applicable coupled with the speakers slightly shrill and overly upbeat voice made me feel I was receiving a lecture from my mother more than enjoying an audio book and my eyes rolled in the back of my head more than a few times.

Imagine if by the time you died, you did everything you were told to. You worked hard, saved your money, and looked forward to financial freedom when you retired. The only thing you wasted along the way was…your life. Die with Zero presents a startling new and provocative philosophy as well as practical guide on how to get the most out of your money - and out of your life. It’s intended for those who place lifelong memorable experiences far ahead of simply making and accumulating money for one’s so-called Golden Years.

Novel idea, but only applies to upper middle class
Revisado: 11-27-22
I love the concepts of spending money at the most beneficial point in life, but feel one really needs either a rudimentary understanding retirement savings theory or tremendous amount of will power to put any of these ideas into practice if one is lower down the economic ladder lest this book be just another reason for the YOLO lifestyle that jeopardizes the financial future of many currently living paycheck to paycheck.
The book was well written and communicated interesting financial concepts well.

Alex Blum was a good kid, a popular high school hockey star from a tight-knit Colorado family. He had one goal in life: endure a brutally difficult selection program, become a US Army Ranger, and fight terrorists for his country. In the first hours of his final leave before deployment to Iraq, Alex was supposed to fly home to see his family and beloved girlfriend. Instead, he got into his car with two fellow soldiers and two strangers, drove to a local bank in Tacoma, and committed armed robbery....

Less of a crime drama more of a family drama
Revisado: 12-27-21
Makes you realize all crime stories aren't as cut and dry as you would think.
I just wish the author would have stuck more to the circumstances surrounding the crime and characters surrounding the actors involved than needlessly inserting himself into the narrative much more than necessary.
Author inserts his political opinion in two quick blurbs that have nothing to do with anything other than TDS.

The Intelligence Paradox: Why the Intelligent Choice Isn't Always the Smart One

Historia
Satoshi Kanazawa's Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters (written with Alan S. Miller) was hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "a rollicking bit of pop Science & Technology that turns the lens of evolutionary psychology on issues of the day." That book answered such burning questions as why women tend to lust after males who already have mates and why newborns look more like Dad than Mom. Now Kanazawa tackles the nature of intelligence: what it is, what it does, what it is good for.

Refreshingly blunt view of intelligence statistics
Revisado: 12-21-21
I would have been a bit put off by some of the information contained in this book had it not been for the author diffusing my concerns with a framing of this simply being what the data shows and in no way correlates the worth of a human being to their intelligence. Something the author suggests is pushed too often in modern westerner societies and we are not the better for it.

One of the most often cited, seldom read classics!
Revisado: 12-20-21
Most are familiar with "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as a quick blurb in American History classes when speaking of the abolitionist movement or more colloquially as a derogatory slur but how many have actually read it?
I'm not sure if it isn't mandatory reading because of the VERY frequent use of the word "n*****" or it's unabashed push of Christianity despite it's often critical views of characters portrayed as Christians.
This book portrays difficult and sometimes disturbing subject matter from a complicated time based on real experiences of the author and made me rethink my feelings on cognitive dissonance and humanity as a whole.

Historia
Critical race theory is a hot-button topic that is having a huge impact on society. However, many people seem to have a misconception on what it is and what it is about. This audiobook introduces critical race theory in an easy-to-understand manner, covering many important areas such as: the history of Black Americans, racism, and why critical race theory came about; how the civil-rights movement failed to bring about equality; the tenets of critical race theory; and much more.

a good starting point for CRT
Revisado: 11-28-21
Although not as neutral as what the book would like itself to be, I believe it to be a overall fair starting point for anyone beginning to understand critical race theory.
Admittedly my feelings on the bias of the book maybe due to my own bias towards liberalism and the lack of the books criticizing CRT's criticism of liberal thought.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Historia
The Reconstruction and Rise of Jim Crow describes the fallout of the Civil War, whose aftermath left the United States South angry and poor. This book details the struggles to decide how to deal with the newly freed slaves, through the years of Reconstruction, Jim Crow, sharecropping, and segregation. The storyline also sets the stage for the country’s next battle, which is between the Jim Crow laws and the 14th and 15th Amendments.

Stereotype busting look into American Antifascists
Revisado: 03-15-21
Left leaning individuals see them as a benign group of eccentricly left leaning individuals fighting against the conservative hate machine.
Right leaning individuals and "milk toast fence sitters" see them as spoiled rich kids larping as colourful haired revolutionaries.
Both are sorely mistaken...
In this exposé, Andy Ngo pulls back the curtain and lifts the mask of America's newest and most misunderstood political force that has long had an influence in shaping the political landscape of Europe.
The real world examples of tactics that are both fear inducing and brutal to a point just shy of lethality (by design) are deceptively cloaked in a guise of banality and leaderless grassroots activism by reconstructing the definition of words and political PSYOPS.
This book changed the way I view the American Antifascists movement.

Historia
On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp - the dogs were gone. Mawson plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizable, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?"

incredible survival story, with a long lead up

There was a slow lead up filled with historical information and background on the characters relationships until the actual survival situation of which I was most interested. The story of survival and then the cabin fever that followed after the rescue was incredible.
