Historia
Survival Math is both a personal reckoning and a vital addition to the national conversation about race. Mitchell explores the Portland of his childhood, tracing the ways in which his family managed their lives in and around drugs, prostitution, gangs, and imprisonment as members of a tiny black population in one of the country’s whitest cities. He discusses sex work and serial killers, gangs and guns, near-death experiences, composite fathers, the concept of “hustle,” and the destructive power of drugs and addiction on family.

Author a terrible narrator!
Revisado: 03-29-19
I think this might have been a good book if the author left the narration to someone else.

Standing in the trauma room of an emergency department is like standing at ground zero of a nuclear reaction, only it's not radiation that is released - but stories. Stories that are told and retold, sometimes just until the end of the shift, but sometimes for decades.

Narrators need to know their topic
Revisado: 05-23-18
There are few things more distracting than listening to a book with a medical topic and then be jarred by a glaring mispronunciation of a medical term. It’s like fingernails on a chalkboard! Please narrators, know your topic and ASK if you’re unsure about a pronunciation. There are probably hundreds of doctors out there like me who would be delighted to critique and advise. And producers out there—you shouldn’t release an audiobook without being certain there are major errors like this in the completed production.

Historia
The messages waiting for Henry Pierce when he plugs in his new phone clearly aren't intended for him. They indicate something has gone terribly wrong for a woman named Lilly. Pierce probes, investigates, and then tumbles through a hole, leaving behind a life driven by work to track down and help a woman he's never met. Connelly's latest is "a grabber from the beginning...utterly compelling."

Hackneyed Plot
Revisado: 11-27-17
Reverting to the identical twins separated at birth is the ultimate plot when a writer can’t come up with anything else. That’s a disappointment from Mr Lagencrantz. Other than that it’s a great read.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Connelly never lets the reader down
Revisado: 08-26-17
And The Late Show is his latest jewel that I hope will become a series. Renee Ballard is a detective who takes no BS, is sharper than than most of her colleagues, and could accurately be called hardboilled. Her dog Lola is equally loveable. Ballard is complex and compelling. The plot is impossible to put down.

Pure schmaltz!
Revisado: 07-06-17
If anyone "grins" one more time I'll have to scream. That's easily the most overused word in this long, drawn out piece of lovelorn fiction written for star-crossed 14 year-olds

Where does Anna and the Swallow Man rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Pretty low because it was such a downer with no evidence of redemption
Who was your favorite character and why?
The Swallow Man. Very mysterious

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Narrator not good
Revisado: 08-13-16
The story was great but the narrator apparently thought she needed to sound like a little girl who was supposed to be VERY dramatic. It was very annoying and distracting. I almost quit listening--it was that bothersome. My advice to the narrator: don't give up your day job.

The main character (person not dog) wasn't easy to care about until at least halfway through the book. Then he slowly grew on me. The dog, of course, was loveable from the start.
