Historia
Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Interesting. Some lazy shortcuts.
Revisado: 12-22-23
This is my first read of LitRPG. At first it seemed odd but once familiar you just let it flow. This first book was interesting all the way thru but had one major fault—too many, almost routine occurrence of things just working out too easily. In a game sense it can be described as having a D20 and always rolling 14+. That reduces the “realism” of this magical world unnecessarily.
I’m also concerned that though the character grows in ability ala the genre, he does not develop as a person. Perhaps that will change in next book?
End result is that I do what to know what happens next so will seek Book 2.

Terribly slow reader. I couldn’t get passed it. Spaces every few words. That ruins the whole series.

Historia
The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of airships and steam engines, of unusual animals and mysterious machines. Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, gets separated from his wife, Marya, in the overwhelming swarm of tourists, residents, and miscreants.

Undecided
Revisado: 02-06-23
This is well written book with a very original story and concept though has two major flaws to my taste.
First the main character Senlin is so much the center of attention that the story feels simplistic. More subplot would have been appreciated. This may be a side effect of the central story structure—Senlin climbing the Tower meeting different people along the way—but it’s an effect that is less engaging.
Second also perhaps is of the same cause, that because we’re in a completely unique world and each level of the tower is a different experience there is a lack of universe consistency that makes many things feel like “the butler did it” moments, random results without an inkling of foreshadowing or expectation. This may be a feeling that goes away as one reads further into the series. It is also however a fine line that the author is trying to walk, making us smile with truly original stuff while fighting this nonsequitur annoyance.
Will I read the next book? Not right away but eventually. Hopefully that will smooth out these issues if Bancroft’s vision is as well planned as one would hope.

Historia
Consider these commonly held scientific beliefs: Planetary orbits are fixed ellipses; we only use 10 percent of our brains; nothing travels faster than light; a thrown object’s trajectory is a parabola. They seem correct, but they’re all misconceptions that aren’t entirely accurate. There’s much more to the story than you think. These magnificent 24 lectures are devoted to busting myths, clearing up confusion, and giving you scientific epiphanies that could change how you think about your everyday world.

Above and Beyond
Revisado: 02-11-20
Lay science education is limited in the internet age by shortened articles and generalizations as a compromise to bring it to a wider audience. At times however it would be nice to go deeper, to move a step closer to understanding what scientists do—subtleties and finer details. This book does that brilliantly without requiring science degrees, though previous exposure to the subjects will make this a most-enjoyable experience.
For any science fan this is a must-watch, must-listen book.
And just in time Audible has upgraded their app, linking the pdf directly. (That still needs some improvement so one can view the pdf while playing/pausing the audio.)
