Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Brilliant narration
Revisado: 09-23-20
Brilliant narration of a wonderful story. The characters were brought to life with Mexican history background, including the flu epidemic of 1917-18. I absolutely loved it. I paced myself to not finish too quickly and savored each chapter.

Complex story that kept me hooked

Intertwined characters maintained a common thread that kept me interested to the end. A different kind of story, for sure, with people you get to know and like.

The beginning reflects Patsy's young narrative, that of a child, that comes across as fake. But soon I was drawn into her mind and life as a young woman maturing into an old lady. Her story is spellbinding

Gave it 2 hours, couldn't continue
Revisado: 03-22-16
What disappointed you about All Things New?
I couldn't care less about the characters or what happened to them.
What was most disappointing about Lynn Austin’s story?
I was interested in the details of southern living after the Civil War and how hard it was for them to accept the changes to their lives. I was also interested in the choices the slaves had and how different families adapted, but the complete ignorance of how to even dress oneself, and the insisistence of running a household the same way without slave help got tiresome.
What does Robin Miles bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Narrator was fine with accents and character representation. It was the writing and the story that didn't hold my interest.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Story seemed trite and it was frustrating to listen to.
