Historia
The National Hockey League saw the birth of a new dynasty in 1980. The New York Islanders had been an expansion franchise in 1972 in the New York City suburbs of Long Island. For years they played in the long shadow of the big-city New York Rangers and were considered the league’s laughingstock during their first season. Miraculously, eight years later, they were champions.

A Good Story about a Great Team
Revisado: 03-06-24
I enjoyed Birth of a Dynasty very much as a Hockey fan who started following the NHL much later on after the Islanders were on top. This book does a good job telling this era’s dynasty story, one that had many ups and downs and just how fragile success in Sports is. So the Narrator did a solid job, got about 80% of the names right a few bad pronunciations but not at the horrific level most Hockey Audio gets. Also this is a preference of mine but I think in Sports books dealing with so many different numbers and names I would’ve like the narrator’s pace a bit slower for things like that to sink in. I know you can turn the speed of the narrator up or down but that has never sounded good to me the book being read a bit faster than I like is fine.

Historia
The Hartford Whalers were a beloved hockey team from their founding in 1972 as the New England Whalers. Playing in the National Hockey League's smallest market and arena after the World Hockey Association merger in 1979, they struggled in a division that included both the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens—but their fans were among the NHL's most loyal. In 1995 new owners demanded a new arena and, when it fell through, moved the team to North Carolina, rebranding as the Hurricanes.

Thank You Price for adding another good Hockey Book to the Audible library… Ken Dryden has been doing a lot of heavy lifting
Revisado: 02-22-24
I really loved listening to this book about the Hartford Whalers history because I was barely around for it but I love their jerseys, I love the WHA lore, and especially that first NHL team. In the beginning of the book Price states he is not a huge Hockey fan and that had me concerned about the upcoming material, actually this flows like a great sports history book should you get the feel of the eras. Like the title of this review says there are precious few Hockey books on Audible and unfortunately many of them are ruined by God Awful pronunciation of player’s names, Thankfully Price IS a Hockey fan and knows the names he reads. Thank you for the great book. I would love to see Hartford (and the Quebec) eventually get their teams back.

In the 1920s Rogers Hornsby was the National League's foremost star, its biggest since Honus Wagner, and its principal answer to the American League's Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. He was a seven-time National League batting champion, and his 1924 average remains the major-league high for this century.

Don’t Be a Humpty Dumpy Listen to Rogers Hornsby
Revisado: 01-13-20
Rogers Hornsby is a legend in the game of Baseball, what I learned from the book was that Baseball was his life. This is a good listen, I love hearing about the 20’s teams that shaped Baseball into the National Pastime. This book also details some of his personal life, but I feel like Charles C. Alexander stuck with the facts and did not turn this into a gossip. At the same time he addresses some general negative feelings people had about Hornsby it is not a puff piece. I have been on a run of ol’ time Baseball books on Audible and this was another great entry, it is nice to hear about teams other than the Yankees too.

A Look Into One of Baseball’s Greatest Seasons
Revisado: 01-09-20
I love Audible’s selection on Babe Ruth and the Yankees. I have listened to just about every one. This book is really special because it is a deeper dive into a specific season of Ruth’s. The House That Ruth Built will give you game accounts, interesting tidbits about the city of New York, the fans relationship to Baseball, and developments in the game. Robert Weintraub does a splendid job of making this about New York Baseball because that is what 1923 was about, he doesn’t waste too much time giving the readers the Babe Ruth stories every book has, instead you hear about Ruth to that point and more of how he was viewed before he became the Greatest athlete in professional sports. I cannot recommend this book enough, a great compliment to follow up Creamer’s Ruth Bio. Audible find more of these historical season books, I want to see a book about Jimmie Foxx soon too!

Historia
Seventy baseball seasons ago, on a May afternoon at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio lined a hard single to left field. It was the quiet beginning to the most resonant baseball achievement of all time. Alongside the story of DiMaggio's dramatic quest, Kennedy deftly examines the peculiar nature of hitting streaks and with an incisive, modern-day perspective gets inside the number itself, as its sheer improbability heightens both the math and the magic of 56 games in a row.

56 Joe Dimaggio and the Last Magic Number in Sports is a fine book. I want to put it out there if you are trying to find a great Joe Dimaggio book on audible this is clearly the one. Dinner with Dimaggio is also a fine book but that one gets more into what being his friend was like. I love the game accounts and the heart put into this book. A no doubt A+.

A Great Book on Mantle
Revisado: 12-28-19
I enjoyed Mantle: The Best There Ever Was by Tony Castro, I got a good feel of why Mantle is one of or possibly the most admired players in baseball. I liked the format of this book far more than The Last Boy also, I had trouble staying interested in that book.
Of the Mantle books I have found on Audible this one is the best, but I would also love in the future a book that really accounts the blow by blow of every season with those iconic Yankee teams, this book really hits on the key moments and still gives you a good feel for Mickey’s career.

Pete Sampras is arguably the greatest tennis player ever, a man whose hard-nosed work ethic led to an unprecedented number one world ranking for 286 weeks, and whose prodigious talent made possible a record-setting 14 Grand Slam titles. While his more vocal rivals sometimes grabbed the headlines, Pete always preferred to let his racket do the talking. Until now.

Great to Hear from Pete
Revisado: 08-03-19
It took me a long time to finally buy and listen to this audiobook and I think the reason why is because of underwhelming feedback from Audible members on their reviews.
Now that I have listened to the entire book I can say it was absolutely worth a credit and was a great book.
Pete Sampras was my favorite player as a kid because he had such an overpowering game an was so consistently great and this book takes you closer to his perspective of it all.
If you are a fan of him or just want to find great books about tennis (which Audible is in sore need of) check this one out.
