Strong end to series
Revisado: 12-03-23
I had gotten impatient with this series in book 4 (and in fact didn't finish that book). Nevertheless I decided to put this on and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
So often the last book in a series feels predictable or plodding but this one felt unexpected and yet surprisingly logical to me.
Furthermore, I appreciate how I can feel sympathy for many of the "bad" characters here; Newman makes them feel very human.
The author left a few hints that there may be another book, but as far as I'm concerned this is a very satisfying place to stop.

Historia
Hundreds of years ago, the last humans on Earth boarded the Exodus Fleet in search of a new home among the stars. After centuries spent wandering empty space, their descendants were eventually accepted by the well-established species that govern the Milky Way. But that was long ago. Today, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, the birthplace of many, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. As many Exodans leave for alien cities or terrestrial colonies, those who remain are left to ponder their own lives and futures.

The more things change the more they stay the same.
Revisado: 11-22-23
A year or so in the lives of members of the space dwelling humans (and at least one other species) who live in "the fleet". The book has interesting moments and some of the characters grew on me.
Individual characters have problems and dramas, but overall this is an extremely positive take on humanity's future. Becky Chambers may be the most optimistic Sci-fi writer around.

Unbelievable
Revisado: 11-16-23
The mystery is okay. But the book feels formulaic. I can see the author setting up the next book in which we'll see these characters again but they're not interesting enough to get me to buy the next.
Historically, it's pretty lazy. I found the main female character to be very modern.

Ends with a cliffhanger
Revisado: 11-12-23
I like this author. The world building in this series is fascinating at times and the characters are complex and believable (albeit within the fantasy genre) . So, kudos to author. I recommend the series for fans of fantasy; and for those who don't see themselves as fans, give this a try.
I really get annoyed, though, at being asked to buy 2 books when I wasn't expecting it. Sigh... maybe this is just my personal pet peeve.
The first book of this series has an ending which, while leaving material for more books, feels like a real ending. That is, if I'm not into the series I'm not left frustrated. But, here -after book 2 of series- I feel frustrated.
So, listen to this (or read it), but prepare yourself to shell out for the next book too.

It originated in Asia, moved to Europe, and is now consumed worldwide — a slightly-fermented tea that is purported to cure everything from indigestion to cancer. We’re talking about kombucha, which has exploded in popularity in the last quarter century. While the exact health benefits of kombucha remain unproven, it’s quite certain that the effervescent elixir provides its worldwide fans with a spiritual lift unlike any other drink.

A bit over the top
Revisado: 10-17-23
Yes, the author is a bit too enthusiastic about Kombucha but he also got me interested enough to try it for the first time. I really enjoyed it.
I enjoyed listening to this while I went about my day. Perhaps Kombucha didn't actually change his life but I do see it as part of a huge change in his life. Honestly, the pleasure this book provided me revolved around my happiness for the author. He does seem to have become a better human being.

Historia
In this rich new audio production, acclaimed British American actress Rebecca Hall brings one of E. M. Forster's most admired works to life in this classic tale of human struggle. A charming young Englishwoman, Lucy Honeychurch, is wooed by both free-spirited George Emerson and wealthy Cecil Vyse while vacationing in Italy. Though attracted to George, Lucy becomes engaged to Cecil despite twice turning down his proposals. On hearing of the news, George confesses his love, leaving Lucy torn between marrying the more socially acceptable Cecil or George, the man she knows would bring her true happiness. Should Lucy choose social acceptance or true love?

Enjoyable
Revisado: 09-25-23
I found the story fascinating partly because of what it reveals about the England of the beginning of the 20th century. Also, it's just a fun listen overall.
Even more interesting because I'm also reading a book on WWI, and so I listened to this with almost a sense of foreboding for these characters.
Narrator was wonderful (I wasn't sure about her for the first half hour or so but came to appreciate her voice and style).
Awesome to have a recording like this included with membership.

Historia
There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

Inventive
Revisado: 09-19-23
I found myself thinking of Terry Pratchett as I listened to this (in a good way). First, one of the character's plot line reminded me of Pratchett's book, Small Gods. Second, there's something about the way Tchaikovsky explains the characters' motivations and the working of the world that feels like Pratchett.
He's not as consciously humorous but there is some humor, maybe slightly twisted, as when the executioner tries to sell a silk noose to a client, as opposed to the scratchy hemp noose.
In spite of the above example and the fact that there is quite a bit of violence, this isn't an overly dark book.
I enjoyed it a great deal. It's the first book I've read by Tchaikovsky but I will try another.

Liked it in spite of myself
Revisado: 09-09-23
I got this on impulse as a daily deal without doing any research and I probably would not have gotten it if I had researched. I'm suspicious of books with elves and wear wolves... "Paranormal" just feels like it's been over-done. Plus, there's a type of flippant humor that characters tend to spout in these books that can be annoying.
Nevertheless, this book ended up drawing me in to the point that I'm considering purchasing the next one in the series. The main character may be a bit predictable but she does have some surprises & overall she's likable. The world building isn't heavy handed (reader gradually figures out the world as the plot moves forward) and I'm at least curious about where that will go.
Later I found out this book is by an author who got her start with self-published books and I feel even better that I took a chance on this.

I think I enjoyed it more because I didn't read much about it before starting. Better to figure it out for oneself.
There were moments when it felt a little slow, but by the end I had come to appreciate the journey and I want to listen again at some point.
I appreciate how thoughtful this book left me. Adventure and food for thought: a great combination.

Revising earlier review
Revisado: 04-22-23
I believe I complained that the books in this series were too short (meaning that they were pricey relatively speaking), but I've changed my mind because I just listened to this for a second time and enjoyed it immensely.
Start with the first in the series, though, which is the best and which sets up all the rest very well. (After the first, it isn't vital to stick to the order although they do form an arc.)
The narrator is good. I do think, though, that his voice is too clearly male whereas the main character is genderless. But, again, now that I've listened to some of these books twice, I've come to find the voice natural for the character.
This series is fun and suspenseful, sci-fi adventure, but also works with interesting concepts in a coherent future.
