Emotional, hopeful, heartbreaking

If you need a book that will make you want to go into an author's DM's and swear at them (affectionately) for breaking your heart, this is the one.

Well written, good character growth, and all the feelings if you resonate with never quite fitting in and never quite being enough.

The narrator did an excellent job, it felt like I was listening to a full cast.

Quick and dirty fun

I keep coming back to this, I've listened to it 4 times. The narrator is good and the "dialogue" is fantastic.

I can't tell if this is 1 o 5 stars, speechless

This is definitely "dead dove, don't eat". It was exactly what the content warnings said. I don't know what I expected, probably the first half of the novella but definitely not the second. Excellent writing, occasionally horrifying content. And HEAs are nice, I think..?

Quick, dirty, leaves you wanting more

Just check the warnings before reading, because this thing excalates quickly. The only reason it didn't get a higher rating is that it's too short to fit a little more plot. Together with the Losers Duet they're a 5 star read all the way through.

Excellent narration

I'm speechless, how come evertime I pick something up for spice it ends up being the most cathartic reads and just the therapy I need. Love this book, love the story and the challenges. No notes.

Comparatively dark

I'm not sure in which book this series turned serious and dark but in this book it's quite noticeable.

I did not read this as a thrilling and humorous adventure as I have the previous ones. Rather I just wanted to get to the end so I could move on to a more comforting book.

Of course I will keep going with the series because I love this author and the previous installments. But I'm definitely hoping that the next book will bring a change of pace from this one.

Great narration, occasionally confusing

I like the series sine reading it many years ago. There are many characters to keep track of, and while it gets more confusing when read aloud, the narrator's impressive range of voices makes it easy enough to follow. The biggest downside for me is that the pauses between sections of the book are too short, so that it gets confusing to follow when the perspectives and locations change.

Clever regency romance

I love reading miss Carriger's Parasolverse novellas, it gives a greater depths to characters and there are gloriously small nods to the main series at times that make you go "ah".

As a standalone novella it is cute and with just enough backstory splashed in there for one to not be utterly confused about the characters or how the society functions.

There is one thing that bothered me enough to remember after finishing: the voiceovers that are meant to show that a character is thinking. There is no real consistency in how they are presented (sometimes a full sentence, sometimes the starting words, and at one point I believe it was a different voiceover than the actual thought), and the overlap in voicelines thoroughly pull me out of the 'verse and into my world.

However, that is not enough to mark the novella down, because it is, in itself, a joy to hear. I will moat definitely be listening to the other novellas as well.

Good premise, uneven execution.

I enjoyed the competent narrator and the story had a fun premise, but the amount of swearing limited listening locations. I really enjoyed the first half, but the ending felt rushed. Glad to see it's the first in a series, or I would have been disappointed. Overall it is a good, but not great, listen.
