Really good reminds me of Narnia
Revisado: 03-02-25
I’m reading all the Newbery winner books and I didn’t think this one would be as good as it turned out to be! It felt a lot like the Narnia series, specifically The Voyage of the Dawn Treaded! It was so refreshing to have a girl as the hero and follow her journey! Very well written, it was a little long but overall excellent

Historia
The Light Princess is a short story that is warm and humorous, with a surprisingly poignant conclusion. A princess doomed by a witch to lose her "gravity" results in a silly heroine that has neither physical nor spiritual weight. George MacDonald's masterful teaching on the subject of sacrificial love is delivered eloquently in the events and characters of this engaging story.

Long, beautiful classic literature every woman should read!
Revisado: 11-28-23
This is an absolute beauty of a tale, reminds me of a Norwegian Jane Eyre a little bit. The 3 books are all equal in detail, depth and intrigue. I am amazed at how much was taught through this story about human nature, our own sinful nature and the depravity of sin. I enjoyed the fasting, prayers and learning more about the Catholicism in that society but was sad to hear little about the receptive power of Jesus over Mary!
Highly recommend, my book club read this over a year but I started late and chose the audio version!

Historia
Pearl Tull is nearing the end of her life but not of her memory. It was a Sunday night in 1944 when her husband left the little row house on Baltimore's Calvert Street, abandoning Pearl to raise their three children alone: Jenny, high-spirited and determined, nurturing to strangers but distant to those she loves; the older son, Cody, a wild and incorrigible youth possessed by the lure of power and money; and sweet, clumsy Ezra, Pearl's favorite, who never stops yearning for the perfect family that could never be his own. Now Pearl and her three grown children have gathered....

Family and Loss
Revisado: 11-15-23
This book spoke to me in the season of life I am in, both my parents have passed and relationships are strained with my siblings; it’s hard to explain the depths of hurt and loss one feels within a family and on the outside. Hearing this story from each person’s perspective was really interesting- but so much loss throughout makes it heavy to take in. I liked the ending a lot!

Historia
When New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff got curious about tapping into his full potential, he launched a research study with Dr. Mike Peasley. They asked more than three thousand people if they felt they were living up to their full potential. Fifty percent of people reported that 50 percent of their full potential is untapped. That means half of us are walking around with half-lives. No wonder Twitter is so grumpy.

This book captivated me from the beginning with Meryl Streep reading it. It was simple and complex at the same time. I enjoyed this in a weekend and am sad it’s over. Maybe you need to be a mother to appreciate it fully? Not sure, but it spoke to my heart on so many levels. Highly recommend

Historia
Julie would remember her happy days at Aunt Cordelia’s forever. Running through the spacious rooms, singing on rainy nights in front of the blazing fireplace. There were rides in the woods on Peter the Great, the races with Danny Trevort. Maybe best of all were the precious moments alone in her room at night, gazing at the sea of stars. But there was sadness too - the painful jealousy Julie felt after her sister got married, the tragic death of a schoolmate, and the bitter disappointment of her first love. Sometimes it all seemed like too much to handle.

Revisado: 03-10-23
I’m reading all the Newbery winners and this one is such a gem! I wish I would have known about this book when I was a tween girl! It reminds me so much of Anne of Green Gables but with its own flare and story line. The simple lessons and wisdom are long gone from our modern books- this is a new favorite!

Historia
"Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." With her grandmother's taunt, Louise knew that she, like the biblical Esau, was the despised elder twin. Caroline, her selfish younger sister, was the one everyone loved. Growing up on a tiny Chesapeake Bay island in the early 1940s, angry Louise reveals how Caroline robbed her of everything: her hopes for schooling, her friends, her mother, even her name. While everyone pampered Caroline, Wheeze (her sister's name for her) began to learn the ways of the watermen and the secrets of the island.
