A refreshing re-read!
Revisado: 08-07-23
How refreshing it is to go back and read an early book by this author team! Over the years, I have read just about everything Preston & Child have published, but of course there are a few stragglers I just never read for whatever reason. This was one such book, and it hearkens back to the early days of the Pendergast series, falling somewhere behind Reliquary, based on references made in the book. Those are my golden years for the Pendergast series, and this book, while not part of that series, features some crossover characters, and was like a time capsule back to the days when I could not read fast enough to keep up with my desire to know what is going to happen next. Sure, the modern works by Preston & Child are still a high priority read for me, but I have felt the magic has waned to some extent. Thunderhead illustrated in no uncertain terms that my malaise is not just in my head. The older books are better. There was an immediacy and freshness that I just don't feel anymore. Author enthusiasm? New stories and characters with boundless potential for the writers, unlike now where the weight of years and experience have worn the surviving characters so obviously and the story pool is much more shallow? Who can say. At any rate, this was a great tale and very fun to read. Makes me want to go back and revisit the earliest Pendergast series. They were spectacular through Brimstone. Progressively less so since, sadly.

Minor spoiler included, so be forewarned...
Revisado: 03-30-23
Spectacular. Nothing else needs to be said, but, in an effort to not leave a one word review, I will wax shamelessly on how engrossing, interesting, and effective this novel was at keeping me coming back for more. Honestly, I could not put it down, and with the Audible narration being supplied by none other than Jefferson Mays (THE voice of The Expanse novels), it was a truly pleasurable experience! Minor spoiler, so if one wants to read with no foreknowledge whatsoever, stop reading now, and go enjoy this book!
For those who stayed, the ending is as huge a cliffhanger as The Waste Lands was for Dark Tower fans. Those who read those books are shuddering as they read this, and know EXACTLY what I mean. The upside is that we can rest assured the next Pendergast novel will be released before five years pass, as was the case for DT fans after The Waste Lands. I still feel trauma over that

I hate that it ended...
Revisado: 11-14-22
I have read this a few times before beginning my Goodreads reviews, and at the risk of dating myself, before computers were a household thing and on cassette tape, no less. I more recently listened to a couple of the stories herein, and it was great to go back and re-read this full book. The icing on the cake was that it was read my none other than the late, and still my favorite narrator, Frank Muller. This was as top notch a reading experience as I could ever ask for! I hate that it ended, honestly.

Pretty freakin' awesome
Revisado: 11-14-22
The third and final was not quite as compelling as the second book, but it was still a thrill ride and pretty freakin' awesome. The depictions of Innsmouth were a bit twisted and a novel approach, which I liked. The culmination (no spoilers) is satisfying. I could say more, but will let new readers experience it for themselves. Overall, this was a great series that I highly recommend for lovers of Holmsian and Lovecraftian Mythos.

Almost up there with my favorites...
Revisado: 11-14-22
Another fine edition to SK's body of work. I quite enjoyed it. The first half is a solid five star, the second half suffered a bit by what I call the King 3/4 slump, where the narrative bogs a bit under its own weight. Thankfully the ending brought everything together nicely, and made for one of the most poignant endings for a King book. Well done! Technically, I would consider this a five star book, but I have to differentiate my top five or so King books from the ones that are very close but not on the same level. Four stars it is. Constant Readers will have already read this, and the rest of y'all won't be disappointed, unless you are a King hater, in which case why are you bothering to read my review or the book? Later folks.

The cover art brought me in...
Revisado: 08-10-22
I had my eye on this book for awhile because that cover artwork is freakin' spectacular! Love that image, and while I don't necessarily feel it captures the character and environment from the book (I get a serious weird western vibe), it certainly evokes a story unto itself as any great illustration should. As for the narrative, it was GRITTY, DARK, and VIOLENT. Caps are on purpose, because everything is dialed to eleven here (Spinal Tap reference which illustrates my point perfectly to those who know) so readers need to be prepared. I really liked the technology posited, and it made for a compelling and thought provoking world in which to explore. The narrator likewise was perfect for the novel, though I found myself noticing British pronunciations of various words because they were just different enough to pull me out of the narrative at times. This would not be an issue if reading the novel in print, so chalk one up for the added dimension of Audible narration! Needless to say, this is highly recommended on all counts.

Revisado: 08-10-22
I honestly don't know why I never got on this sooner, as Jonathan L. Howard is one of my favorite authors. Guess it just needed to marinate on my TBR list long enough to be ripe. I loved the new twist on old tropes, and an enthralled. This receives a full five star review and recommendation, and listen to the Audible edition. read by Ari Fliakos. You will thank me later.

The second is superior to the first...
Revisado: 06-09-22
I liked this installment of the series so much better than the first book. It was compelling and the ending makes me want to start the third book RIGHT NOW! The narrator (same as for the first book) was great this time, and I enjoyed the performance thoroughly. Not sure why I had my doubts after the first book, but as I mentioned in that review, I guess I just wasn't feeling the book at the time I read it. Weird. for certain. Regardless, this sequel allayed all doubts, and I will be continuing post haste.

Satisfying and absolute.
Revisado: 05-26-22
Minor spoilers will follow, so skip this review if one wants to read this without knowing what is in store, even to the small amount I plan to share here. All ya'll gone now? OK, I will proceed. I have loved this trilogy, and rank this final installment as equal to the first with regard to content. However, with the ending, there is no doubt this is the final book in the series. I will say no more on that score. The conclusion is as poetic, poignant, and satisfying, as it is absolute. What I will say is that fans of the Dark Tower series will rejoice. This is officially a Dark Tower book. Up to this point it was increasingly hinted at, and tangents even revealed in the second book, but here, we get MORE DARK TOWER! That alone makes this a top notch series in my estimation. HIGLY RECOMMENDED!

Possibly my favorite book of the year...
Revisado: 05-24-22
This was a full five star read all the way. Everything was top notch from story to narrator, and I have been in a void since finishing because I miss listening to it! There will definitely be a re-read of this in my future! Since I have not read Atemis, I can only compare this to The Martian, which was also a five star reviewed book by me. Honestly, I think I enjoyed listening to this even more than that one, and I would rank the book as every bit as amazing as The Martian. Do yourself a favor and read this, now.
