Brilliant story of the early life of a genius

No one who listens to the language of Nabokov can forget him. It is dense, rich, funny, and always surprising. His early life story is instructive in the unexpected and rarely told descriptions of pre Bolshevik Russia. It is a testament to what was destroyed by the communists and it is a warning for today. Highly recommend.

This memoir is quite moving because it is written by a man who truly loves his country but whose rulers feel threatened by him. It's a story of resilience in the face of oppression but it's also a story about the growth of one man's soul. A worthwhile book to read in any form.

Basic introduction to Irving Berlin. Despite some attempt to delve into the nature of his genius, the book falls short . When it was finished, I felt as though it was a prolonged Wikipedia entry or the kind of composer biopic described in the book as a mundane film.
