Superb. A master class in why and how to forgive.
Revisado: 03-17-24
This book was recommended to me by a priest friend. It is absolutely fantastic. If you’ve ever had to work on forgiving someone, whether for something small or something that you really believe is unforgivable, then this book is for you. It is practical, scientific, full of, common sense, and written in a plain, non-academic style that is very accessible. Just terrific.

He sat down with the experts and asked them directly. Join Matt on his often comical yet deeply disturbing journey as he answers the question generations before us never knew they needed to ask: What is a woman?

Historia
If there’s one trait that makes someone well-suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch - metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy - with a face you can’t help but want to punch.

Fantastic and surprising
Revisado: 01-26-21
I’ve been a casual fan of Colin Jost and a long time fan of SNL. Like a lot of people, I assumed he was sort of a smug, rich Harvard kid. That, as it turns out, was completely wrong and unfair. He grew up blue collar on Staten Island and has worked his butt off at SNL. There is so much to love in this book – it’s so funny that I laughed until I cried several times, and it is really poignant when he talks about his family and especially his mother. It’s a wonderful break from the many things our world is going through these days, and I recommend it highly.

Absolutely wonderful trip through the 80s
Revisado: 08-24-20
I will confess that I had never heard of Flint Dille, but I was struck by the blurb that said he wrote my childhood. Boy did he. This was a wonderful book, and the perfect August read. It took me entirely out of the crazy world of August 2020 and back to a simpler and more innocent time. The book is wonderful, smart, and self effacing, with a remarkable amount of good life advice he draws from his experiences. I was also struck by the almost total lack of profanity. I think there may be one bad word in there somewhere, but that’s it. He just seems like a genuinely good guy who’s not trying to show off by throwing around cursewords, which would’ve been so easy to do in a book like this. I am very grateful to him for taking the time to write this book and for making it such a delightful read.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Fantastic. And a great pandemic read.
Revisado: 04-13-20
As we all struggle with how to handle the Coronavirus, I thought it might be useful to learn more about how the English handled something much worse—the Blitz. This book delivered. I had heard of Larson, of course, but never read him. I see now why people like him so much. The books moves like a novel and does a terrific job of focusing on a selection of main characters you want to know more and more about. The narration is terrific, too. Highly recommend.

Historia
In this gripping new work, Meghan examines our country’s most intractable problems with clear-eyed honesty instead of exaggerated outrage. With passion, humor, and most importantly, nuance, she tries to make sense of the current landscape - from Donald Trump’s presidency to the #MeToo movement and beyond. In the process, she wades into the waters of identity politics and intersectionality, thinks deeply about the gender wage gap, and tests a theory about the divide between Gen Xers and millennials.

Buy this for your kids! (And you read it, too.)
Revisado: 11-29-19
What a wonderful book. Meghan Daum, a self-described liberal feminist and proud member of Gen X, provides a much needed antidote to the silliness that pervades much of the culture these days, in the guise of what she calls the “wokoscenti.” This book is full of common sense, and because it is written by someone on the political left, is bracing in a way that a conservative attack would not be. If you have a kid going off to college, buy them this book. Heck, you should probably buy it for a kid in high school, too, because the silliness indoctrination starts there, if not earlier. She also reads it wonderfully, with a wry voice that I found eminently bingeable. Just a great book.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

One of the greatest nonfiction books I have ever read
Revisado: 09-03-19
I had heard a lot about this book, and I doubted that it could be as good as people said it was. I was wrong. It is absolutely riveting. A thrilling detective story of greed, lies, and a journalist’s dogged pursuit of the truth, in the face of a company that is doing its best to intimidate him and anyone who is talking to him. It’s also a master class in ethics, from some of the people who stood up to this terrible company and told the truth despite extreme pressure. Highly recommend!

In Love Your Enemies, New York Times best-selling author and social scientist Arthur C. Brooks shows that treating others with contempt and out-outraging the other side is not a formula for lasting success. Blending cutting-edge behavioral research, ancient wisdom, and a decade of experience leading one of America’s top policy think tanks, Love Your Enemies offers a new way to lead based not on attacking others but on bridging national divides and mending personal relationships.

Revisado: 07-30-19
This is an absolutely wonderful book that everyone, regardless of their political affiliations, should read. It will give you practical advice for how to interact with people with whom you disagree and treat them with respect, not contempt. I honestly wish that before getting a Facebook or Twitter account, people were required to say they’ve read this book. It would make our world a much better place.

A genuinely important book
Revisado: 06-20-19
This book belongs on your shelf right alongside the latest one by Jonah Goldberg. It’s a stirring defense of western civilization and a very smart overview of how intellectuals, some good and some bad, got us where we are today. I didn’t know much about Ben Shapiro before reading this, besides knowing that he is a devil to the Left, and I was genuinely impressed by him.
