Historia
Based in part on Donn Pearce’s own experiences working on a Florida road gang, this classic story of Cool Hand Luke, the defiant survivor who refused to be defeated by the forces of corrupt authority, is earthy, sensitively written, and revealing.

Detail and depth
Revisado: 01-25-24
For most of us who have seen the movie, this story provides the detail and depth that was not possible in the movie. Reading the book, as much as I like, Paul Newman I don’t think I would have cast him in the role based on Mr. Pearce’s book. Pearce’s Luke is not the wistful rebel of popular culture. The book’s Luke is a more more tragic and damaged figure, and the end is even more troubling. I think the movie resolves in a sort of redemptive note, and in the book it reaches a depth of despair that could not have been achieved in 90 minutes. The book establishes a sense of place both in Florida, and in Europe that provides a deep background for the setting in the story. As prominent popular culture as it is the movie in does not really do justice to the book.

Essential reading for anyone wanting to evangelize without using religious words
Revisado: 05-11-22
Mr. Merritt has really helped me see how I can explore the message of Jesus Christ good news to the world when the language of “proclamation can sometimes be the very barrier to the worlds hearing the message. He has also helped me see, that there really is no such thing as the world. The world is the people I live with every day at home and at work. Please read this book.

Historia
A producer at the BBC and mother to a new baby, Tessa is at work in Belfast one day when the news of another raid comes on the air. The IRA may have gone underground in the two decades since the Good Friday Agreement, but they never really went away, and lately bomb threats, security checkpoints, and helicopters floating ominously over the city have become features of everyday life. As the news reporter requests the public's help in locating those responsible for the robbery, security footage reveals Tessa's sister, Marian, pulling a black ski mask over her face.

A story of conflict where there are no “sides”...
Revisado: 04-14-21
Both the story and the performance are powerful, complex, subtle and compelling. The characters become fully three dimensional. The lilting narrative of the story begins to encircle you and draw you in. I little these bands of narrative begin to tighten around your chest. And toward the climax you’ll notice your breathing becomes more shallow until finally you stop breathing at all. I’ll never look at Northern Ireland again in the same way. The view of living in a bifurcated country is worth considering since it mirrors many of the same issues around the world.

Historia
When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

A little more sexually graphic and violent for me.
Revisado: 02-05-21
I appreciate Galbraith literary skill and imagery well thought out story. But I found the use of graphic sexual imagery and violence a little more than I am comfortable with would not recommend it on that basis. I can see why Rowling chose nother name because I wouldn’t want a 10-year-old checking out her book thinking they were getting Harry Potter.
