Very Interesting!

Survey data and anecdotes on the dechurched were very interesting. Second half of the book, where they discussed solutoons, was weaker. Overall a great read on an important topic.

Historia
A significant number of Americans, especially evangelical Christians, believe Earth and humankind were created in their present form sometime in the last 10,000 years or so - the rationale being that this is (presumably) the story told in the book of Genesis. Within that group, any threatening scientific evidence that suggests otherwise is rejected or, when possible, retrofitted into a creationist worldview.

Thorough, but accessible. Covers the evolution argument extremely well. Goes through creationism, intelligent design and theistic creationism and explains each and their arguments and then goes through the science. A great read for a Christian struggling with reconciling faith and science.

Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Good but Incomplete
Revisado: 06-08-21
The book was an interesting read. I thought she made several important points about the historical context of women serving God, but I found her support for egalitarianism thin in textual support from the Bible. I feel like she needed an additional chapter to address it more fully .

Historia
There is now no doubt that not only is Waiting for Godot the outstanding play of the 20th century, but it is also Samuel Beckett's masterpiece. Yet it is both a popular text to be studied at school and an enigma. The scene is a country road. There is a solitary tree. It is evening. Two tramp-like figures, Vladimir and Estragon, exchange words. Pull off boots. Munch a root vegetable. Two other curious characters enter. And a boy. Time passes. It is all strange yet familiar.

Historia
Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.

I read this because I wanted to get through the classics but I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did. Thackeray is hilarious and I kept finding myself laughing aloud as I listened. As relevant today as the day it was published.

Instantly relatable and relevant
Revisado: 03-07-17
Tolstoy used Anna Karenina to have conversations with the reader on religion, faith, politics, work and other big topics. These conversations are still relevant and poignant to the current. I was very happily surprised at how much I enjoyed the novel. Also, Maggie Gyllenhaal was a great narrator.

A pilot stranded in the desert awakes one morning to see, standing before him, the most extraordinary little fellow. "Please," asks the stranger, "draw me a sheep." Witty & Wonderful, but Google the illustrations
Revisado: 05-19-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have already recommended this book to several friends. It's a light, short story that at once, doesn't take itself too seriously, but also makes you think about big concepts like mortality, morality, what it means to be loved, etc.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Little Prince?
The introduction/first chapter is one of my favorites. It's very post-modern and makes you chuckle.
What about Humphrey Bower’s performance did you like?
His voice for the title character was great. I also like the pace of his voice. It was very intentional where he decided to pause or speak more quickly, etc.

An amazing read from Golding himself!
Revisado: 05-19-16
Where does Lord of the Flies rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This audiobook provides amazing commentary at the start and end from William Golding (the author) himself.
While Golding's thick British accent can be a bit tough to decipher at times, the book is quick, wonderful and very much an I-have-to-keep-listening sort of tale. Highly recommend.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Lord of the Flies?
When Ralph and Piggy find the Conch for the first time is a pretty fun scene. Additionally, when Simon finally confronts "The Lord of the Flies" is something I'll never forget.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I definitely gasped a few times throughout the reading.
Any additional comments?
Lord of the Flies is a brilliant story of what happens when boys are left to their own devices and laws cease to exist.
